Ditto for Hangfire. Subverted at the end, when it turns out Hangfire's face was actually quite familiar, since he was Ellington's father whose picture she carried everywhere. As with the originals, Lemony has a way with words. Numerous times I found myself stopping to think about one of his signature offhand comments, sayings that reveal a keen sense of understanding of the world around him. I also enjoyed the little game he plays with the audience, of describing a book plot without actually giving away the title. In this way he often blurs the lines between children's lit and adult fiction, as you being to wonder who this series is truly meant for. Wham Line: In one of his arguments with Lemony in When Did You See Her Last?, Stew mentions having a friend who's good with a knife. Considering one of the villains of that book is repeatedly described the same way, this implies that there is more to Stew than meets the eye. There are multiple references to ATWQ in the A Series of Unfortunate Events TV series, including When Did You See Her Last? ( The Bad Beginning: Part Two) and Who Could That Be at This Hour? ( The Carnivorous Carnival: Part One). Violet also says to Klaus, "That's the wrong question," in The Reptile Room: Part Two. Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: Kellar Haines. during his brief period of being forced to aid Hangfire and his mother making several failed attempts to clue Lemony in on what's happening. Half-Identical Twins: In 13 Suspicious Incidents, the Cozy twins look alike enough to be mistaken for each other despite being different sexes. In 2018, an alternate cover of Who Could That Be at This Hour? was released, featuring a more realistic style of illustration, though the inside of the book remained the same. The blurb on the book included a reference to Netflix, which was at the time releasing a series based on A Series of Unfortunate Events, leading some to believe that the new cover release may be predating a prequel adaptation; no such plans have been confirmed, however, and neither have any subsequent books been released with new appearances.

Not Now, Kiddo: Theodora refuses to listen to Lemony and insists on running things her own way, such as breaking the Mallahans's house to steal the statue, while Lemony tries to tell her that they already gave him the statue for free. It is explained in the book that when the Bombinating Beast swims, it looks like a question mark, most likely referring to The Great Unknown in The Grim Grotto.
