About this deal

Make the sauce: Simmer the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan for 1 minute to bloom the flavors. Maple syrup: This sweetens the paste and adds that slightly smoky flavour we love. But you can use another sweetener like brown rice syrup or honey. Here are some ideas of ways to spice things up with your toppings and make this dish new every time! The mushrooms will give off a lot of water when cooked. In fact, you may find yourself feeling as though you’re boiling mushrooms as it cooks (top left in the collage below).

This is a chili paste but it is made to be a replica of gochujang. It has a little bit more texture to it than some paste options but you’re going to get a similar flavor and can use it for all of the same things. Then add minced garlic. It will accentuate the flavor of your paste. Four cloves are enough for 8 ounces of paste. Though Koko Gochujang is “all-natural,” many people are thrown off and surprised by the container. Yes, the container is hard plastic. Hard plastic containers are typical in Korea for their fermented products. It is rare for you to find gochujang in glass at the grocery store.Ingredients: Corn Syrup, Water, Red Pepper Seasoning (Red Pepper Powder, Water, Salt, Garlic, Onion), Rice, Rice Powder, Sea Salt, Ethyl Alcohol, Red Pepper Powder, Fermented Soybean Powder, Soybean Powder, Glutinous Rice Flour, Garlic, Koji (Aspergillus Oryzae). In a pinch, ssamjang can be a good substitute for gochujang. But it works even better if you add a splash of maple syrup and chilli powder. Add fine cayenne pepper to taste if you don’t have gochugaru. Surprisingly, I bought my gochujang at my local grocery store! My favorite brand is Chung Jung One as it is both gluten free and vegan. The sweetness is from the starch of cooked glutinous rice, cultured with enzymes during fermentation. Gochugaru, made from dried Korean chilli peppers, also contributes to the sweet taste. Gochujang also forms the base of other condiments. Cogochujang contains gochujang with vinegar and other seasonings, such as sugar and sesame seeds. Ssamjang is a mix of gochujang and doenjang with more flavourings like chopped onions. You can find all of these ingredients at a Korean market, and most Asian markets if there’s one near you. If not, most of them can be sourced online as well, and I’ll link each ingredient online in the recipe card below as well! Using this, you get the heat from the gochujang as well as a fermented tanginess as this paste is made from fermented rice starch. Some of the recommended substitutes for gochujang really don’t cut it. While they are delicious pastes I love to use in cooking, the flavour profile does not match that unique Korean flavour of gochujang. Harissa paste Firstly, the tofu must be folded into the dish. I like using previously frozen medium tofu in this recipe – and I will explain why later. This versatile chile paste is spicy hot, a bit sweet, a bit savory, a bit salty. Lots of flavors mingle together to make this addictive condiment. Ingredients
