GP surgeries used to offer an NHS ear cleaning service, but in England they aren't contractually obliged to provide ear wax removal treatment and many no longer do. Avoid using this medication if you suffer from dizziness, or if your eardrum is or has been injured or if you are using a hearing aid or other ear drops in the ear or if there is pain, discharge, swelling, or infection in your ear

We asked leading expert, Kevin Munro, Professor of Audiology at the University of Manchester, to assess how effective and appropriate a selection of products were for home use. You have had your ear syinged in the last 2 to 3 days, or tried to remove ear wax with your fingernails, cotton buds or other implements, as this could make it painful to use the ear drops See enclosed leaflet for details, cautions and instructions. If in doubt, or if there is any history of ear problems, seek medical advice before use.Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product. Professor Munro considered that this product, and ones like it, could seriously damage the ear canal or ear drum, and potentially worsen wax impaction by pushing wax deeper in. He also said he knew of no independent studies that evaluated how safe and effective this type of tool is. Ear drops are an affordable and effective treatment. A drop or two of specially-formulated liquid, left to work for a few minutes several times a week, is usually enough to make even hardened ear wax disintegrate and come out of your ear naturally – without the need to push foreign objects into your ear canal. Otex Ear Drops contain the active ingredient urea hydrogen peroxide to help break down hardened wax in your ears to help relieve temporary hearing difficulties and discomfort caused by a buil-up of ear wax. Earwax is a natural secretion of the ear. Its purpose is to provide a protective layer on the eardrum and in the ear. Sometimes too much wax is produced, which can result in issues with hearing and for some, it may even cause pain. However, you might find the drops cause their own discomfort, such as making your hearing worse or irritating your ear.

Over about 2 weeks, lumps of earwax should fall out of your ear, especially at night when you're lying down.

The only cleaning necessary is to gently wipe inside the 'bowl' of your ear with a damp flannel over a finger, to clean away the wax from the entrance to the ear canal. About 2.3 million people in the UK, including hearing-aid users, have troublesome ear wax requiring removal each year, along with around four in ten care-home residents. Before having these treatments, you'll probably be advised to use ear drops for a few days to soften the wax.

Discontinue treatment and consult your doctor if pain or irritation occurs during use, or if symptoms persist Ear wax is normal and protects your outer ear, helping to stop bacteria and fungi growing, and cleaning and lubricating your ear canal by trapping dirt, dust and hair. Usually, your ears get rid of it naturally.

if you have tried to remove the ear wax using fingernails, cotton buds or other implements. Ear drops that contain olive oil ( Cerumol) or Docusate Sodium ( Waxsol) can also be used to help soften the ear wax to aid its removal. Alternatively, earwax can also be removed by your doctor or practice nurse, where the ear is flushed out with warm water (syringing). Sources Ear canals are not straight tubes, and you could easily poke in the wrong place if you don't know what you're doing. Ear wax is a normal secretion of the ear. It is produced to provide a protective layer in the ear and on the ear drum. There are times when too much wax is produced. This can result in hearing difficulties and may cause pain.
