During the Socialist Republic of Romania in the 20th century, Christmas carols were banned by the government of Ceacuescu. The smug pun on "gravy" and "grave" is amusing, and there's a poetry of sorts in that "fragment of an underdone potato." Though Scrooge is a bit hesitant of this deal, he is ultimately given little choice on the matter, and those three visits comprise the unforgettable spine of this book. Finally, I have taken it upon myself to read the source material! Did I like it? Two words: BAH, HUMBUG!Christina Rossetti's poem " In the Bleak Midwinter" has been set to music by Gustav Holst (1905), Harold Darke (1911) and others. In addition to being hard of heart, Scrooge is a man with a deliberate philosophy of self-exoneration. It consists of two principles: 1) taxpayers fund the poor houses and prisons, thereby discharging in full their obligation to all of their fellow human beings, and 2) death by starvation, although it may seem regrettable, is actually a positive good as proven by science (because Malthus!), and relieves the rest of us of the burden of a surplus population. This philosophy is the shield that protects Scrooge from feeling the pains of sympathy and compassion. Certainly Scrooge had sunk to nasty depths, and maybe " It was all the same to him" reflects Scrooge's conscious and observable attitude, rather than the deeper, painful mix of happy and sad memories that he tried so hard to suppress, even though Scrooge would have denied it and believed his denial.
This passage really got to me, and I started to cry. In February, I started an experimental treatment, and I was able to walk again. When I go to church, there are usually no seats left except in the front. As part of my genetic defect, my body can’t process protein. There are extremely high levels of protein in my blood including my brain, and it makes me unbearably tired. The original Latin translation, ‘Adeste Fideles’ is said to have a connection to subversive Catholic ideas at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. The Jacobite meaning of the carol gradually faded with the cause, but this hymn remains one of the most uplifting sings of the Christmas period.

Good Christians, All Rejoice is a lively carol, the first mention of which came in the 14th century, but earliest manuscripts date from the 1400’s, and was originally intended to teach peasants about Christianity through folk music. The setting is also well known as In Dulci Jubilo. Carols and their words continued to be disseminated, even in the 16th century when Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans tried to ban the singing of carols. This carol was written by Edward Caswall in 1858, who was also the translator of many popular hymns. The music Humility was written by John Goss in 1871. O Holy Night
Scrooge's chambers are "a gloomy suite of rooms, in a lowering pile of buildings up a yard, where it had so little business to be, that one could scarcely help fancying it must have run there when it was a young house, playing at hide-an This carol tells of the Bohemian Duke and Martyr ‘Wenceslaus’ who was converted to Christianity in the 10th century. The tune is actually from a spring ‘carol’ originally found in the same medieval songbook as ‘Gaudete’. But enough of money matters, for now! The 19th-century "Cantique de Noël" (also known as "Minuit, chrétiens", adapted as " O Holy Night" in English) is another classic.
This was changed by St. Francis of Assisi when, in 1223, he started his Nativity Plays in Italy. The people in the plays sang songs or 'canticles' that told the story during the plays. Sometimes, the choruses of these new carols were in Latin; but normally they were all in a language that the people watching the play could understand and join in! The new carols spread to France, Spain, Germany and other European countries. Christmas carols in predominantly Catholic Philippines exhibit the influence of indigenous, Hispanic and American musical traditions, reflecting the country's complex history. Carollers ( Tagalog: Namamaskô) begin wassailing in November, with mostly children and young adults participating in the custom. Some carols familiar in English are translations of German Christmas songs ( Weihnachtslieder). Pastoral Weihnachtslieder are sometimes called Hirtenlieder ("shepherd songs"). Martin Luther wrote the carol " Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her", which can be acted as a play of the Christmas story. He also wrote " Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ" and " Christum wir sollen loben schon". The carol " Vom Himmel hoch, o Engel, kommt" was written by Friedrich Spee in 1622 to an older melody, a lullaby singing "of Jesus and Mary", and for peace.
