About this deal

The main calming transmitter in your brain is called GABA [gamma-Aminobutyric acid]. Alcohol enhances GABA, which is why it relaxes you and makes you more convivial. will see the ‘No and Low space’ expand into interesting territory… ‘No and Low’ has become a functional sector where mindful drinkers can opt-in and socialise with sophisticated drinks choices that add proven holistic benefits to their wellbeing.” Is SENTIA healthy? More moderate volumes of alcohol, around one or two units, raises our body’s GABA activity, which is understood to be the reason alcohol is so widely enjoyed. Sentia is the first drink to replicate the pro-social effects of alcohol, by targeting the brain system that mediates them,’ David tells Metro.co.uk.

However, for somebody just starting out on their alcohol-free journey, those people who want to give their bodies a rest during January after the excesses of Christmas, or somebody who really does miss that alcohol buzz, then Sentia and zero-alcohol functional spirits like it could be the way forward.A drink that hits all the right notes, creating the harmonies that enrich how we socialise. Feel good about yourself... about tonight and about tomorrow. It’s safe to say there’s a market for all this. In 2020, 11 new non-alcoholic spirit brands launched in the UK market, making a grand total of 42. As a non-drinker it doesn’t matter to me that my choice of beverage doesn’t contain alcohol – I’m well over it, and the awful hangovers and regrets it brought with it. The fact Sentia is alcohol-free isn’t emblazoned across the bottle — if it weren’t for the ‘0% ABV’ printed at the bottom left of the label you wouldn’t know.

London, UK. Jan. 03, 2021 – British-based, Drink Ingredient developer Alcarelle is a pioneer in the alcohol alternative space, designing a product that aims to be “better than alcohol”, allowing people to experience all the benefits but without use of ethanol. GABA Labs is a pioneering and science-driven company that develops ingredients as patentable alternatives to alcohol. ‘Alcarelle’ is a synthetic GABAergic* ingredient that can be used to make adult drinks and works as an effective catalyst for conviviality and social interaction without some of the unpleasant aspects of ethanol.

GABA (Gamma aminobutyric acid) is a naturally occurring substance that produces a calming effect, enhancing conviviality and sociability. So to raise that money and develop the concept, we started looking for botanical ingredients that would work in a similar way to GABA. We identified four plants that in combination, and with uptake enhancers, produced this effect. SENTIA is a new generation of plant-based alcohol-free spirits containing a proprietary blend of 'Botanical GABAergic Ingredients'. Designed by the scientists and innovators at GABA Labs to offer what we want from alcohol, without the alcohol. On the plus side, Sentia’s been found to improve sleep in some people and you don’t get the munchies – which means no more 3am kebabs.

There’s still a place for recreating comforting classics with non-alcoholic spirits. Gordon’s deliciously juniper-infused 0.0% spirit went on the market just before Christmas, and – like Seedlip – it shows that a grown-up, treaty drink doesn’t have to involve booze. At the same time, GABA Labs is expanding into the Botanical Spirits and Alcohol-Free beverage market with the launch of their subsidiary company – The Social Drinks Company (TSDC). During January, The Social Drinks Company will enter the consumer beverage market with their first Botanical Spirit, Sentia*. But Sentia does much more than mimic the taste and texture of an alcoholic spirit: it actually gets you tipsy. The magic recipe has been developed from decades of scientific research into the way that alcohol affects the brain. When you get down to it, taste is the most important factor in a drink – happily, Sentia hits the mark in that department.

This research has branched into two directions. The long-term project is the invention of a synthesised, alcohol-alternative molecule. Then there’s Sentia: the herbal alternative, which took the past two years to create. GABA Labs has also completed its first botanical ingredient known as ‘ABI’. The ingredient has been licensed to The Social Drinks Company which is now launching the first of a new range of botanical spirits called Sentia. ‘ABI’ is a botanical ingredient which can be formulated into a liquid product to provide an agreeable drinking experience that mimics (to a lesser degree than Alcarelle) the sociability and conviviality effects of alcohol-based drinks. ( This innovation is evaluated in the Channel4 ‘Food Unwrapped’ programme that will be shown at 8pm UK time on the 11th January). The discovery that GABA is at the heart of the ‘good’ alcohol experience and the development of the ‘botanical GABA blend’ is a game-changer for the industry,” he says. There are other botanical drinks on the market – such as Three Spirit Drinks, which uses ingredients including cacao and lion’s mane for mood-boosting, energising effects. Not to mention the slew of non-alcoholic beers, wines and spirits already flooding the market. Today the company announced they’re rebranding, and will operate as GABA Labs. This name change reflects the company’s evolution and focus – increasing their product offerings and communicating to a wider audience, says Managing Director of GABA Labs David Orren.

Don't take our word for it...

Consuming high volumes of alcohol leads to all sorts of unpleasant effects I’m sure we’re all familiar with! It was developed by Professor David Nutt at GABA Labs after 40 years of scientific research and five years of product development. It doesn’t have a strong smell – just a hint of botanicals. Neat, over three cubes of ice, its full flavour comes through: a strong, herbaceous first taste, followed by sweetness, then a clove-like aftertaste. It’s a bit like mulled wine.
