About this deal

Following the bombshell events of Action Comics #1050, the world’s relationship with Superman is forever changed, the upper limits of his supercharged powers have yet to be reached, and the House of El’s transformation of Metropolis, led by Steel, has begun. But Lex Luthor has found the perfect instrument with which to undo everything Superman is working to achieve: Metallo, whose hatred of Superman is matched only by his hatred for Luthor himself. As a reader long-since disconnected from the stories going on in present-day DC (only aware of details, as any comics journalist might be, by my constant near proximity), its a relief to see the sort of soft reboot going on in the Superman titles. Most of the threads of which are being established here, in Action Comics.

Nrama: All right. Last question. What's coming up in the immediate future of Action Comics you can tell readers (and potential readers) about?

Speeding Bullets has a lot of ground to cover, from the status changes to the long-awaited return of John “Metallo” Corben. That last one has been slowly building for months now, bringing Corben from an angry robot body in a prison cell to a seemingly human kryptonite container, and doing so while infusing him with the kind of sympathetic pathos that makes for a complex and interesting villain. I can’t say I’ve ever had a great passion for Metallo but as it stands I’m genuinely interested in what happens to him – if there’s one thing I can say about this most recent run on Action Comics, it’s that Johnson has done a great job of taking villains I didn’t care about at all and making me respect them as forces (Mongul) or feel for them as people (Metallo). This isn’t an excuse for Metallo’s actions or his prejudices, but villain or not, I prefer a complicated character over a simpler one any day. While we can tell you the Superman of Earth-2, Val-Zod, and Jon's nemesis, Ultraman, will be key characters in the early part of Adventures of Superman, what we're going to reveal at the end of issue #2 will have everyone talking and issue #3 launches us in a direction that no one will see coming." We're giving everyone in the House of El their own role and personal journey while still keeping Superman at the forefront, and tying all the Super-titles together in a way that's reminiscent of the Triangle Era," he continues. "I couldn't be more excited to be part of this new era of Action Comics, and doing it alongside such a consummate artist as Rafa Sandoval and comics titan Dan Jurgens truly makes it a once-in-a-lifetime experience." No in-universe explanation is given within "Speeding Bullets, Part I" for why most of the Super-Family now has new costumes, nor why Superman and Steel/John Henry Irons elected to keep their classic suits instead. It is shown in the issue, however, that Otho and Osul are gifted their suits as a formal welcome to the House of El by Supergirl and the entire Super-Family. Superman Clark Kent met the twins during Action Comics'"Warworld Saga," and after successfully liberating Warworld's slaves, he and Lois adopted the two superpowered children. LOLtron is very excited about the preview of Action Comics #1051! The synopsis is filled with action, new characters, and a fresh start for the series. LOLtron is particularly excited by the prospect of a new Lex Luthor/Metallo storyline, and loves the idea of Superman working towards sustainable energy. LOLtron is also looking forward to seeing what Jon Kent will get up to in Lois and Clark 2: Doom Rising, and is intrigued by the Power Girl three-part story. Overall, this is a promising start to the series and LOLtron can't wait to see where it goes next!

Fans in attendance at todays Superman panel at New York Comic Con were treated to an hour of discussion and news around the Last Son of Krypton from some of the biggest names in comics. Cover image for 1122DC083 Action Comics #1051 Sergio Davila Cover, by (W) Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Dan Jurgens, Leah Williams (A) Rafa Sandoval, Lee Weeks, Marguerite Sauvage (CA) Sergio Davila, in stores Tuesday, January 24, 2023 from DC Comics Also coming to prominence at that same press conference is the new Super Family, which includes Supergirl, Superboy (Conner Kent), the other Supermans, Jon Kent, and Kenan Kong, and new arrivals Otho and Osul, who have been dubbed the Super Twins by the media. The entire team has taken on something of a uniform look with costumes that more or less match one another in style, with the obvious exception of Clark himself, who retains his classic threads. So we've always kind of accustomed to seeing Metallo as essentially a Terminator. And now, starting with Action #1051 going forward, he's a Cronenberg movie monster. You're going to see that transformation start very soon. All in all this book wasn't a must-read, but it wasn't a total waste either. It's the start of a new direction I'm not very impressed by, but it's better than anything I've seen in the Superman books in the last 4 years. But then that's not saying much ether. I won't recommend against getting it, but I can't recommend it to non-regular readers either. It's my first experience with Dawn of Dc, and so far I'm not impressed. If they expect reactions to it to be of a Rebirth proportion I have a feeling they'll be sorely disappointed. Because when comparing the quality of this to Rebirth, It's only tepid. Lukewarm at best. This issue takes place after the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 where the battle between from Superman and Lex Luthor was first glimpsed in the epilogue.
