Aldi Stores (Australia) collected top awards for its O’Donnells Christmas Pudding Country Cream, and O’Donnells Tiramisu. The Christmas Pudding bottling was “spot on Christmas-pudding-spice and raisin”, while the Tiramisu entry had a “beautiful nose – exactly like tiramisu”, leading to “chocolate, coffee, dessert” flavours on the palate. “Flipping delicious,” enthused Pamplin. Yet, when oranges ripen, the essential oils seep through the skin into the fruit flesh. And once it's inside the pulp, it's lost for the producers of Triple Sec. How to use Triple Sec?

The liqueur is colorless and usually contains between 20% and 40% ABV. The flavor of Triple Sec is intensely zesty, orangy, and citric.

As mentioned before, oranges for Triple Sec get harvested when their skin is still green. Since the liqueur is made from the peel and not the fruit flesh, the orange skin needs to have as much flavor and aroma as possible. Triple sec and orange curacao are both orange-flavored liqueurs. While triple secs are generally clear, curacao can span a variety of hues. Contrary to popular belief, the term curacao on a label does not designate that the product is from that island. In short, all orange liqueurs are alcoholic beverages that are sweetened with orange flavoring. Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier, the likely inventors of Triple Sec, opened their candy shop in Samour in 1834, and this company is still in business today.

Completing the Master run in this round was De Kuyper’s Mandarine Napoléon, which was “rich, honeyed, with lovely deep Cognac notes”. Anora Group added to its medal haul in the following Mint flight, where the judges found a Gold medallist in Koskenkorva Minttu. Eichler found flavours of “bright mint, with a little dark chocolate and spiced heat”. As the name suggests, Triple Sec is a drier style of orange liqueurs. In French "sec" means dry, so the term "Triple Sec" literally translates to "triple dry". In summary: Cointreau is a type of Triple Sec (a family of dry orange liqueurs). Triple Sec is both the name of a category and also refers to an inexpensive, lower quality orange liqueur.

A broader flight of Coffee liqueurs were presented next. Two Gold-worthy winners stood out to the judges, the first being The Barista Coffee Liqueur by Wolf Lane Distillery. Pamplin said about this entry: “Lovely fresh coffee nose, super bright and fresh – I could heat this up and drink it as my morning coffee. Special to capture these fresh notes.”

A mammoth flight of Fruit liqueurs were divided among the judges next, and the section resulted in an enormous nine Master medals being awarded. The final heat of the day was dedicated to Vegan liqueurs, and living up to the Gold standard was Vana Tallinn Coconut. The product was found to have a “vibrant coconut aroma”, leading to a “bold, creamy palate with powerful coconut on the finish”. Anora Group gained a trio of medals – one Master and two Golds – in the following flight of Confectionery liqueurs. The Master medal was awarded to Koskenkorva Salmiakki-Raspberry (liquorice and raspberry). The judges were impressed with how well the “raspberry cleanly shines through the liquorice”. Chambers said: “This blew my mind, especially the integration of the flavours with such a bold ingredient as liquorice; it was amazing.” Flavor:Triple Sec has a more straightforward flavor vs Cointreau: it’s very citrusy, almost like an orange-infused vodka. The quality ranges based on the brand.Triple sec liqueurs are usually based on neutral spirit made from sugar beet due to its neutrality when compared to the spirit made from grain, wine or sugar cane. Dried orange peel is steeped in the neutral alcohol and then redistilled. The resulting highly concentrated orange flavoured spirit is blended with more neutral spirit, water and powdered beet sugar. Triple Sec is an orange-flavored liqueur. It once was a popular French digestif and is now a generic term for a liqueur made from orange peels and a sugar beet spirit base. Cointreau is one of the best-known brands of Triple Sec on the market today. Cointreau has been around since the 19th Century, so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. When it comes to finding an orange liqueur, look for something balanced, refreshing, and made with all-natural ingredients. Be sure to also consider the base spirit of the orange liqueur (cognac, brandy, etc.) as this can also play a major role in the liqueur’s final flavor profile. Lemon3 Limoncello had an “exceptional lemon peel aroma” and “great texture and mouthfeel”, propelling the liquid to Master status.
