About this deal

At 55mm, sharpness in the centre of the frame at maximum aperture is already outstanding, with the clarity towards the edges falling just short of excellent. Stopping down to between f/4 and f/8 raises sharpness towards the edges to excellent levels, whilst maintaining outstanding clarity in the centre of the frame. This resistance ensures that the zoom doesn’t extend when you are carrying the camera with the lens pointing down.

The Fuji XF 55-200mm OIS is optically superb, has fantastic image stabilization and is faster and better made than other brands of APS-C zooms. Manual focus is by-wire, meaning the manual focus. ring is merely an encoder that talks to a computer that moves the lens. Also, while the AF isn’t as fast as some of the newer Fuji lenses, the 55-200 is no slouch. Over the years, I’ve used it to capture a wide range of action subjects, from sports to wildlife. On all the new Fujis, which have faster image processors, the AF performance is even faster than it was on the X-T1. Lens choice is all about tradeoffs and it always comes down to a compromise between speed, weight, performance, and price. If you don’t want to carry a big heavy lens, and you don’t regularly shoot fast action, the 55-200 is an excellent telephoto for general photography, landscapes and travel. I have used the lens on and off for around five years - having originally bought it for a trip to India - and have always been impressed with the results it provides. In fact, in our lab tests, it holds its own remarkably well against the resolution we measured on the more-professional XF50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR.

Light falloff is completely invisible even wide open, as shot on the X-T1 which is probably correcting it automatically. As with all of my Fujifilm lenses, the XF55-200 Lens feel fantastic and has proven to be extremely durable. It is not as light as my other prime lenses or 18-55, of course. But it’s certainly nowhere near as heavy (or large) as the famous 50-140. The zoom ring is extremely smooth, as is the aperture ring. I feel this is a great option for people like myself, who hike many miles with their camera and need something that is versatile, as well as lightweight. I’m usually a 3-lens guy, with an occasionally 4th, and these days, I’m often heading out with the wide angle 14mm, the sweet little 35mm f/2 for the middle range, and the newly 55-200 for the long end. If you’re looking for a versatile telephoto lens with a nice long range that’s easy to carry and that doesn’t have an enormous price tag, then look no further. You should be able to handhold 300 at around 1/500 without much problem using the 1/f rule-of-thumb from the manual days and allowing for a 1.5x crop factor. Even with 3.5 stops of stabilization (which is about the minimum you get from Fuji with the XC lenses) that comes down to under a 60th.

When used on the X-mount cameras with their 1.52x crop factor, it sees the same angle of view as a 80-300mm lens sees when used on a 35mm camera. When paired with a Fujifilm camera body such as the Fujifilm X-T3 or the Fujifilm X-T30, it doesn’t feel too front heavy – especially given that you are going to have to hold the lens with your left hand to control the zoom ring.

Expanded Fujifilm 55-200mm f3.5-4.8 R LM OIS XF Fujinon Lens key Features: Classic High Quality Fujifilm Build In fact, when holding the lens on its own, the body feels solid and hefty thanks to its relatively short barrel length and entire metal build.Zoom lenses like this are a welcome addition to the Fujifilm X-series line-up, providing greater flexibility and convenience than the prime lenses released with the X-Pro1 provide. As with all Fujifilm lenses, the 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 features an aperture ring. However, this one is unmarked and rotates in full turns in either direction. PS – since completing this write-up my filter arrived and I have taken some shots with the 16-55 – watch this space because there will be another blog coming soon. I will discuss how this lens fits in with my 55-200, 18-135 and 35mm F2 – and which lens is destined for ‘fleabay’)!!

A very slight amount of pincushion distortion is present throughout the zoom range. With only 0.2% pincushion distortion, this shouldn't be noticeable in normal picture taking. If absolutely straight lines are necessary, the distortion is quite simple to correct in image editing software afterwards as the distortion pattern is uniform across the frame. There is no mechanical aperture ring on this lens, but you do still get an aperture control ring, that allows you to adjust the iris opening from the lens itself if you so wish. There is a simple two-way switch that allows you to swap from using this feature to controlling the aperture from the camera's thumbwheel. The Fujifilm 55-200mm f3.5-4.8 R LM OIS XF Fujinon Lens has been designed to provide pin sharp images across its entire focal range, as well as having a large aperture from f3.5-4.8. The lens is capable of high-speed autofocus acquisition thanks to two linear motors and has an in-built image stabilisation system that allows for shutter speeds 4.5 stop slower. The lens has been designed for use on Fujifilm's compact system cameras that have an X lens mount, such as the Fujifilm X-E3. First thing’s first, I wanted a telephoto zoom for my Fujifilm kit. This lens goes from 55mm on the short side to 200mm on the long end, which is a full frame equivalent to 82.5mm all the way up to 300mm. This is plenty of reach for most situations. Even with my 100-400 I don’t have too many landscape shots at focal lengths longer than 300mm. How to read our charts Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.

However, at the moment I shoot with an old fully manual Tamron Adaptall 60-300 F3.8/5.4 and it's serviceable, if rather front heavy. Remembering the old Sunny 16 rule and allowing for the fact that ISO 1600 is now quite usable means that f8 and f11 aren't troublesome any more (hence Canon has released f11 relephoto lenses for those of us who hate lugging big lumps of glass around). Based on the fact that the Tamron is smaller and lighter than the 100-400, I have no interest in that lens but the 70-300 looks just about right - even if it is about the same weight, being optimised for mirrorless means it won't have the extra length that the Tamron has with the mount adapter. Inside the micro-corrugated cardboard box are pulp-formed cardboard holders for the plastic-wrapped lens and hood. A small folded tray of microcorrugated cardboard lies on top to hold the manual and lens wrapping cloth. The Fujifilm XF55200 features a 62mm Filter Thread. Which is perfect since it matches the thread of my 23mm f1.4 lens. I personally use GOBE Filters, which I have talked about time & time again here. The Fujinon XF 55-200mm F3.5-4.8 R LM OIS is the first telephoto zoom for Fujifilm's X system cameras, and offers an 83-300mm equivalent angle of view. It has built-in optical image stabilization with 4.5 stops claimed benefit, and uses linear stepper motors for silent autofocus. The lens features an (unmarked) aperture control ring, and offers high quality all-metal barrel construction. The Fuji X-Mount Lenses are all extraordinary. What most photographers don't realize is that Fuji has for many decades, just like Canon and Nikon, also made far more advanced optics, like binoculars for the military and for use in space, as well as lenses for motion pictures and television with six-figure price tags at discount. Unlike mud brands like Sigma and Tamron (or even LEICA), Fujinon has loads of experience actually supplying optics that cost more than some people's houses, and puts that same know-how into these lenses.
