About this deal

By the end of November 2018, ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) the following month, Sony Pictures Animation had begun developing a sequel [51] due to the "incredible buzz" surrounding the project. [52] The sequel was to continue the story of Miles Morales / Spider-Man, [53] [54] working from "seeds [that were] planted" throughout the first film. [51] Joaquim Dos Santos and David Callaham were set to direct and write, respectively, with Amy Pascal returning from the first film as producer. The other producers of the first film— Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg—were all also expected to return in some capacities. [51] The next month, Pascal revealed that the film would focus on Miles and Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman, exploring a romance between the characters that was cut from the first film, and that the sequel would be a "launching pad" for a previously announced female-focused spin-off film featuring Gwen. [54] Sony officially confirmed the sequel in November 2019, with a release date of April 8, 2022, with Lord and Miller returning as producers. [55] In April 2020, Sony shifted the film's release to October 7, 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [56] a b Fritz, Ben (December 9, 2014). "Sony, Marvel Discussed Spider-Man Movie Crossover". A New Spider-Verse Poster

The script is credited to Lord and Rothman from a story by Lord, making it the first film Lord had written without Miller. [51] As six Spider-Man films had been made already, the team agreed they first needed to decide why this one needed to be made; their answer was to tell the story of Morales, who had yet to appear in a film. [6] Brian Michael Bendis, co-creator of Miles Morales, consulted on the film adaptation. [52] The first full cut of animatics and storyboards for the film was over two hours long, which is uncommon for animated films. The directors attributed this mostly to Lord and Miller, and their approach of adding as many elements to the film as they could at the outset, with the intention of seeing what it could "handle"; and then shaping the film from there. They said that the final runtime would be between 90 and 120 minutes, the standard length of an animated film. They added that a balance would have to be found between the expectations of an animated film that will have a large audience of children, and the requirements of the story. The directors felt the plot was similar to the live-action Spider-Man films, especially due to the large number of characters in the film. [6] One year prior to its release, Lord and Rothman opted to rewrite the story as they had to "figure out how to reshape sequences we had already boarded and animated and fold them in with new stuff" . They also added that they had substantially rewritten the third act.
