About this deal

The best part about a potjie is that it allows you to cook your meals for very long times as they can withstand heat extremely well. The lids provide the perfect cooking pressure to allow your food to slowly cook without burning. For first-time use, wash the inside of your potjie with a mixture of dishwashing liquid and boiling hot water. Coat the inside of the potjie with cooking oil and heat it until the oil begins to smoke. Then wipe clean with a paper towel. Your potjie is ready to cook.

Vaseline Jelly creates a protective barrier that protects skin against environmental factors, such as windburn – and has been used for over 100 years to protect minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. A moisturiser for sensitive skin should be gentle on the skin, safe and effective at moisturising and protecting your skin. The difference in a stew to a potjie pot is that you would never stir the potjie pot. It would simmer and allows the flavors to stew. It is also cooked very slowly for a few hours over a low heat of coals. In the International Phonetic Alphabet ( IPA) "potjiekos" is pronounced poiki:kos however for those of us who do not know IPA here is a layman's pronunciation explanation. Its P for pig followed by K OI without the K, then KEY then K then T OSS without the T so all together it should be POI-KEY-KOSS, "potjiekos".

Whether you are going on a camping trip - or just adding some variety to your weekend braais, traditional potjies are fantastic for many different uses. Compared to the usual indoor cooking pots - potjies are affordable, extremely durable and are perfect for feeding large groups with minimal work and effort.

Curry and Yellow Rice Potjie. Make two potjies at the same time over coals that keep the pot simmering and serve with tomatoes and banana. Here is a rough outline of potjie sizes - but it is always important to find out the exact manufactures’ sizing guide or dimensions.Potjiekos" is a traditional Afrikaner dish hailing from South Africa. It originated with the Voortrekkers in the 1800's and is still widely prepared and enjoyed in South Africa today. It is a simple dish, easy to prepare, with few 'rules' but hundreds of variants. When done properly a "potjie" needs little to no supervision and practically prepares itself. It thus allows you time to enjoy the company of your friends and family while preparing the meal. "Potjiekos", translated would mean 'Little Pot' (potjie) 'Food' (kos) and although it resembles a stew it is not a stew and is not prepared like a stew. The two main types of potjie pots you will find are the traditional 3-leg potjie or the flat-bottomed pot (also commonly known as a ‘dutch-oven’). Both are great tools to have for cooking outdoors or camping trips and which one you are using will depend on your preferred style of braaing or cooking.

Creamy Seafood and Wine Potjie Recipe. A mix bag of seafood required for this potjie pot with some dry white wine and peppadew peppers. While there is not one specific method that will work best on all pots - it is important to always find out what the right method is from the manufacturer of the specific potjie you have chosen - or asking one of our in-store experts to explain why different pots can be cleaned in different ways. Some potjie products have been created to allow for easier cleaning, while others develop seasoning over time which can add amazing flavour to your product in the long term - but can also cause unwanted flavours when not cared for correctly. Champion "potjiekos" cooks prepare their dish in layers, meat at the bottom, then vegetables and then the starch. They then put the lid on and do not lift again until the dish is done. Cooks would listen to the slight bubbling and simmering of the "potjie" by hold a ear close to the lid. This is called listening to the "potjie" talk. The cook listens and then control the heat at the bottom of the "potjie". While holding an ear close to the side of the lid, (be careful not to let escaping steam burn you) the cook should hear a slight bubbling with a bubble every second or two. A rapidly boiling "potjie" is a recipe for disaster. What you should hear is a slight bubble as if the food is simmering. You should never hear something boiling or rapidly bubbling as "potjiekos" is prepared slowly over moderate heat. Adjust the heat source until you hear the desired sound. Remember that it takes a few minutes, sometimes up to 10, before the "potjie" will respond to heat adjustment.Different brands and models can have their own sizing guides when it comes to potjies - but these cooking utensils come in plenty of sizes so that you can feed a family of 4 or a group of 25. There are also other ways to use both these pots however and you can always find new, creative recipes to try and cook with them. If you need to boil some water, make pasta or even deserts - potjies are great as they can be used for whatever your outdoor kitchen needs. To store your potjie, thoroughly wash and dry it. Use cooking oil or LK’s multi-purpose potjie care and protect, to coat the inside and out of the pot. Fill your potjie with scrunched-up newspaper to help absorb any moisture. Finally, store in a dry area.” Vaseline Petroleum Jelly combines all of these properties in one convenient, flip-cap jar.
