Michell wanted to film at Leicester Square but was declined. Police had found fans at a Leonardo DiCaprio premiere problematic and were concerned the same might occur at the staged premiere. Through a health and safety act, the production received permission to film and constructed the scene in 24 hours. [14] Interior scenes were the last to be filmed, at Shepperton Studios. The Dub London collecting project and display enabled us to acquire formative works by these photographic artists, from a portrait of the very first UK sound system operator to last year’s documentation of Channel One’s Notting Hill Carnival act. The photographs below are a selection of newly collected prints and existing works from our collection. Together, they offer a brief visual history of London’s dub reggae icons.

Working on our 2020 Dub London display provided a fantastic opportunity to revisit and enrich our photography collection, examining our images of exuberant Notting Hill Carnival revellers, 1960s blues parties, music gigs and record shops, 1970s fashions, and anti-racism protests. Collaborating closely with Dub Curators Terry Dhaliwal Davies and Cedar Lewisohn, it was especially rewarding to get to know some of the most iconic figures in the history of dub reggae; people who radically transformed London’s music scene in the post-war period. Many of these now legendary characters were captured by celebrated London photographers such as Charlie Phillips and Dennis Morris who, like their subjects, were first or second generation Windrush migrants with roots in the Caribbean.Dennis, Ferdinand (31 March 1999). years ago, Trinidadian Leslie “Teacher” Palmer MBE invited the first ever sound systems and the first official Mas bands to the event. With ‘Mas’ being short for masquerade, the bands brought costumes, masks and other art elements that were popular at carnivals across the globe. With the sound system culture broadening the styles of music played, the public celebration of West Indian culture grew in popularity. The year 1973 also saw the inclusion of street stalls where merchants can sell Caribbean cuisine and memorabilia.a b c d e "About the Production". Notting Hill.com. At a restaurant the next day, Will and Anna overhear six men at a nearby table discussing her, first praising and then disparaging her and equating actresses to prostitutes. Will confronts them, then she introduces herself and calmly insults the stunned foursome. The song played when Will strides down Portobello Road is " Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. Tony and Bernie play " Blue Moon" on the piano at Tony's restaurant on the night it closes. [20] Originally, Charles Aznavour's version of "She" was used in the film, but American test screening audiences did not respond to it. Costello was then brought in by Richard Curtis to record a cover version of the song. [21] Both versions of the song appear in non-US releases. From a small children’s parade to one to two million people a year [attending the event], it’s all about people coming together joyfully and coping with what they dealt with,” she said. “The whole thing grew from a racist murder, a very tragic incident. The fact you see everyone come together in peace and love is a beautiful thing.”
