Classic Gray by Minwax is my favorite gray toned stain on oak! This is a great option if you want to take oak wood and transform it to have more of a cool tone to it. Traditional Oil-Based Stains: Oil-based stains have long been popular for achieving rich, deep colours on oak wood. These stains penetrate deep into the wood, enhancing its natural beauty while providing excellent durability. They are available in various colours, from light tones to dark shades. Further, pre-stain conditioners may be necessary for an even colouration, as oak tends to absorb stain unevenly due to its varying density. Apply two thin coats of the stain, with at least 45 minutes of drying time between them. Once you’ve applied the second coat, it can take two or three days for the stain to cure fully. Be aware that the color will look quite dark at first, but will slowly transform to its true color within 14 days of application. There are eight natural colors to choose from, and the stain is available in 1-gallon or 5-gallon containers.

Using a darker stain: The most straightforward way to darken oak wood is to use a darker-colored product. Dark walnut, ebony, and espresso are popular for creating a darker finish. Most importantly, remember to experiment and test different staining techniques, as each project and piece of oak wood may require a unique approach. With proper preparation, patience, and the right products, you can transform ordinary oak wood into an extraordinary work of art.

If you compare the oak stained with Weathered Oak to that just rubbed with walrus oil (pretty close to raw wood look), you can see that weathered oak slightly deepens the color of the wood and increases the contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the wood grain.
