About this deal

i respect what you have advised, but, according to my reading of the instructions to MOT inspectors, those regulations are not part of the MOT inspection ! Rear fog lights are a legal requirement on all cars. Front fog lights are only fitted to certain models, usually as an aesthetic add-on for higher spec cars. All new cars have DRL, daytime running lights that are also intended to do help the car be seen on the road.

According to rule 236 of the Highway Code, "You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves." Ran accross this post by mistake, but I know the answer to your rear fog only working on left side...

New 21w bulbs fitted to the rear bulb holders and all made clean and bright (they weren't bad to start with). In the UK, street lights on 30mph roads are placed no more than 200 yards (183 metres) apart. So a good rule of thumb for using your fog lights is whether you can see the next street light up the road from the one you're passing. Use this rule, and it's clear that it's only going to be in the foggiest or snowiest conditions that fog lights should be used.

Use your lights if visibility is reduced to 100 metres (328 feet) or roughly the length of a football pitch The whole purpose of fog lights is so that you can see the road on which you are travelling, with clarity. This is because we do not have a compatible climatic condition in the UK, and are sometimes prone to experiencing extreme temperatures, which also includes fog, all of which make driving extremely difficult. Front fog lights can cut through mist, fog, rain or even dust as they are mounted lower down than headlights in the front of the car. Fog lights can also be used to drive in winter, when visibility is low, which is a major winter driving tip. The relay's coil is grounded to the n/s eath header behind the boot carpet and I physically mounted it to one of the posts of the n/s rear light lense assembly.BUT: given the looms in toyotas are usually identical across models, with the extras just being left unconnected, the additional feed to the dashboard must still exist - so the possibility to get a proper illuminated symbol on dash exists (I have often forgotten rear fog is on, because the aftermarket buttons are usually obscured by my knee or steering wheel) Thus the new relay coil is activated by my new fog light switch, only if the side lights are on and the rear fog light circuit is injected with 12v from the rear lights instead of via the MFU at the front.

The dim glow is extinguished when the lights are on - and then all the other switches attain a dim glow as expected. Appreciate your intelligent comment as usual mate but the only way I can see this independent switch working as it should is with dash wiring that has the tell tale light anyway. The pins are all independent on this one. The live core of the twin cable goes to the middle pin of my new switch, the earth core to the switch's earth pin (for the tell tale light only). The ground wire of my twin core cable also goes into the inner wing earth header - it is the eath return for the new fog lamp switch's tell-tale light. In the case of the 2016 Volvo S60 (pictured), a couple rear lights illuminate when you push the button, making the Volvo much easier to spot on the highway in the fog and other poor conditions. Volvo lights are one of the most common examples of rear fog lights. The rear fog lamp is a useful safety feature, but issues arise when drivers are unaware of the feature and switch on the fog lights in normal driving conditions. Sure, you might get a little extra forward road illumination, but you’re also unknowingly blinding drivers behind you and sometimes even making them think you’re braking. Therefore, these optional fog lights should not be used as normal driving lights. If your vehicle has rear fog lights, only switch them on when you are driving in fog, snow or other conditions that may prevent another driver from seeing your vehicle. Does Your Car Have Fog Lights in the Rear? As per the Highway Code, fog lights should be switched off when the visibility is normal, or if it improves after a period of being foggy. Leaving the fog lights on can dazzles drivers ahead. Neither the front nor the rear fog lights can be left turned on when your vehicle is parked, or you may get fined for incorrect usage of your fog lights. Do All Cars Have Fog Lights? Or an equally common question, “I think I have a rear fog light out, only the driver’s side seems to work.” Full compliance with this guide doesn’t guarantee a pass. You’ll need to view the IVA Inspection manual for the full requirements and testing procedures needed to get your vehicle passed.
