Battery life is a hard thing to measure with this vacuum cleaner, particularly in auto mode, as the level of dirt, floor head and type of surface all make a difference. Even so, after extensively testing the vacuum cleaner, and pushing it around on a regular carpet to clean, I found that it lasted for 24m 57s on the automatic mode. Dyson seems to have used the same battery capacity on the V12 as it has on the V11 and V15 models, with a maximum runtime of 60 minutes, and it’s fade-free. So if the appliance has run out of juice, it just stops, with no change in suction whatsoever. Weight How heavy it is can be a deciding factor when buying a new vacuum cleaner. Although the V12 is a 'slim' model, it still weighs 2.2kg, which is not significantly less than V7's 2.32kg. On the Auto mode, we got a maximum of 40 minutes of fade-free power, while the Boost mode gave us no more than 20 minutes with the Laser Slim Fluffy. And that’s pretty much the same as what the V15 Detect offers as well. There are benefits to both types of design. A trigger switch is good, as you only engage the vacuum cleaner while cleaning, maximising battery life; a physical on/off button is more useful for people that find it uncomfortable or difficult to hold a trigger in constantly. I’d actually prefer both options: a trigger and a method to permanently keep the power on. There are some niggles, however, and one of those is having to switch the floor heads for different surfaces. However, the soft roller head does work very well on hard floors and, better yet, it comes with the innovative laser “Detect” feature that Dyson first introduced with the V15. This shows you where the dirt is by lighting it up with a green laser, the idea being you don’t miss anything. It works well but is at its best in dim conditions. Bright sunlight can make the laser hard to see.
