About this deal

Unlike his showman brother, Ryder admitted: “I am embarrassingly shy – that’s why I used to take copious amount of drugs before I went on stage … with Shaun being a Leo and older he was so much more the extrovert, and from what I know he always loved the attention.” Howe, Jon. "Are You Man U, You? - When The Happy Mondays Played Leeds' Elland Road". Sabotage Times . Retrieved 11 August 2019.

Released on August 31, the lead-off single from Yes Please!, Stinkin’ Thinkin’, debuted on the UK chart at number 39. Barely a month later, its parent LP stalled at number 14. The only international chart troubled by its presence was Australia, at number 99. According to Shaun Ryder, “it was not a good album. There were no catchy grooves… it had absolutely no character. Yes Please! wasn’t the Mondays. It could have been anyone.” He didn’t rejoin for another reunion in 2004, but returned in 2012 when the original members reformed – the group continued to tour until the present day. They will be joined on the special run of shows by very special guests and fellow ‘90s British music icons, Inspiral Carpets and Stereo MC’s. It is billed as "The Been There Done That Tour". First inspired by Motown artists, Ryder was then drawn to the Chicago house music of the 1980s, saying that his bass lines were “me trying to replicate that style but using a real instrument rather than a computer”. Aside from our new creative, our advertising campaign will also sport a catchy jingle (which we hope you’ll love). Listen out for our nationwide ads on the radio and Spotify. We’ll also be making an appearance on some of the UK’s biggest podcasts. Overall, our new audio adverts will be heard more than 6 million times by the end of January! The band became icons of Britain’s biggest cultural phenomenon for a generation when they crossed over into the mainstream with the release of their third album, 1990’s platinum-selling Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches. I designed a cheerful and inspirational colour scheme to match the brand characteristics and a main logo (playing with the idea of a happy face). To support the main logo, there are also a series of submarks / secondary logos that can be used to add character to the brand.

VV Brown comments: "The submissions this year were all so different and eclectic. It was difficult to decide and I enjoyed going through them all. At times easy on the ear, at times challenging, but in all very exciting."

In his years away from the Happy Mondays, Ryder released an album with another group, Big Arm, in 2008 and moved to Los Angeles in the late 00s. He also performed live with the New York funk group Tom Tom Club, whose members Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth (also of Talking Heads) had produced Yes Please!. There’s nothing harder than teenage girls,” he said. “Lads are a doddle, lads are fine but teenage girls? It’s so dramatic and there’s screaming and insane drama all the time. I mean, I love them of course, but it’s a nightmare. We’re grandparents’ age now, me and Jo. My other kids are a bit older but it’s harder now with younger ones, it’s worse because of the internet and the communicating teenagers do now. But teenagers are always going to be difficult. In place of the kind of creative unity required to navigate such headwinds, the Happy Mondays had mutiny in the ranks. Reflecting on the group’s choice of producers, in Twisting My Melon, Shaun Ryder complained that “the rest of the band didn’t get it; they didn’t understand that our fans liked our sound. They thought that if we could incorporate Chris and Tina’s sound into the Mondays’ sound, then all the Talking Heads fans would get into it and we would break into a much bigger market. But it doesn’t work like that.” Gordon Barr (1 February 2012). "Interview: Shaun Ryder from Happy Mondays". Evening Chronicle. Media Limited . Retrieved 6 May 2012.

Happy Mondays: Biography". The Guardian home. Guardian News and Media Limited. 13 August 2010 . Retrieved 6 May 2012. The band announced in September 2012 that they were writing their first album with the original lineup in more than 20 years. [ citation needed] By the time I was about 19, I decided I didn’t want to get caught up in the sort of shit I was doing again, so thought the best thing I could do was to have a huge adventure and go travelling. I lived in Morocco for a bit and was shoplifting just to survive; pinching bars of chocolate. I got chased out of town and had to hide in a cave for three weeks until the money I’d been waiting for arrived. You create your own reality, and travelling created one that completely changed my whole outlook on life. The brilliantly bold creative will be making its way across the UK, through a range of different channels – including both online and offline advertising. You’ll get a chance to catch a glimpse of our new ads everywhere (we’re not kidding). Here’s a breakdown of where you’ll find them: The working-class son of a postman and nurse, Ryder was born in Salford in 1964, and was a self-taught guitarist. He said it was only later in his career that he “learned what the different strings were. I’d call them the fat one, the thin one and the one down from the fat one.”

So I never did the 12 steps and had to do that thing where you apologise to anybody you’ve hurt. Apart from my mam and dad. I’m still apologising to my mam…” On 1 January 2023, we launched a brand new 30-second TV ad, available to view on terrestrial and satellite TV. You might have already seen us during the ad breaks for The Great British Bake Off, No Time to Die, or the debut of Stonehouse… However, this will be a truly multi-channel campaign, mixing out-of-home and digital assets. The label's annual mixtape contains new artists from South East London, and it's always incredibly eclectic.

It perhaps goes without saying that the decision by the Happy Mondays to make their fourth album, Yes Please!, in the sun-kissed paradise of the Caribbean was not without incident. Recorded at Blue Wave Studios, a lavish complex owned by the reggae star Eddy Grant, its towering costs helped bankrupt Factory Records, the label on which it was released. With sales of 50,000 copies – far less than a quarter of its predecessor, Pills’n’Thrills And Bellyaches - it would be its authors’ last LP for 15 years. His younger brother Paul, the band’s acclaimed bassist and musical driving force, was not there and would never be again after his sudden death at 58 just a week before. Robb, John (2009). The North Will Rise Again: Manchester Music City 1976-1996. London: Aurum Press. p.261. I met my fiance, Firouzeh Razavi, nearly nine years ago. It was her 30th birthday and she was having a drink with her friends, while I was out with my mate. We walked into this bar, our eyes met across the table, and that was it. I’m not normally romantic, but I tried to make it special when I proposed to her. I set up a posh picnic basket and got her family and my family to wait on the top of this mountain near where we live. Me and Firouzeh walked up the mountain and she noticed a big letter D that I’d put out in tribute to her younger brother who’d died. Then she saw her dad. And her sisters and everyone else, and I proposed. It was great. And it’s easier if everyone is there so you don’t have to tell them all separately afterwards.Happy Mondays started in 2021 as a inspirational brand wanting to encourage people to find joy in every day life, to help with anxiety and to help people who are feeling a bit unsure about the future as we emerge from the pandemic.
