About this deal

Le Petit Beurre is a modern take on the brand’s first-ever biscuit, Véritable Petit Beurre, whose oblong shape took inspiration from French tea mats usedin 1880s, when the brand was founded. The delectable biscuits are available in four varieties, including Le Petit Chocolat, Le Petit Beurre, Le Petit Biscotte, and Le Petit Citron. The LU brand combines French love and passion – created by two pâtissiers who fell in love over their shared passion for baking and a desire to make the most delicious biscuits. The varieties were first produced in France during 1886. The song "Luglio" was also covered by The Tremeloes as "I'm Gonna Try" and by Herman's Hermits as Something's Happening.

LU’s story begins in 1886 when founders Jean-Romain Lefèvre and Pauline-Isabelle Utile fell in love over their shared passion for baking and their desire to make the most delicious biscuits. Putting the first initials of their surnames together, LU was born.

The Lu biscuit advertisement has been around since 1932, and has become a beloved part of French culture. It is an iconic symbol of French advertising, and is recognized across the world. The current Lu biscuit advertisement is a collaboration between the French advertising agency BETC, and the American actor and comedian, Will Ferrell. The ad features the famous line “Ah, le Lu”, and combines humor and nostalgia to create an appealing advertisement for the product.

I’m 50 and I’ve been living here longer than I’ve been in France, it’s true. But I’ve spent the first formative twenty years of my life in France. It left a mark on me and the tradition of ‘le gouter’ is part of the things that never left me. It’s like your mother tongue, you never forget it.” Charlotte Parkes, Senior Brand Manager at LU said in the press release: "It’s not every day that you can say you’ve worked with a French icon. LU’s range are a real treat and are sure to be a hit with biscuit lovers in the UK. With these 4 varieties, we bring something truly unique to the tea table – each with their own irresistible flavour, these are recipes that have more than stood the test of time." It is a cover of the Italian song " Luglio", originally performed by Riccardo Del Turco. [1] The lyrics were adapted into French by Pierre Delanoë. Le Petit Beurre takes inspiration from the first LU biscuit ever made – the Véritable Petit Beurre – offering a signature taste, it’s a deliciously buttery biscuit with a hint of salt. Its iconic oblong shape took inspiration from French tea mats used at the time. The additional design flourishes carefully reflect the calendar year: 4 corner ears for the four seasons, 52 teeth for each week of the year and 24 indents for the 24 hours of each day Whether your biscuit should be dunked in your tea, might be a divisive matter in the UK but for the TV presenter and foodie it is the best way to really enjoy the treats. “People are surprised. They think I’m too sophisticated for dunking because I’m French, but I’ve done it all my life.”

Le Petit Chocolat, Le Petit Beurre, Le Petit Biscotte, and Le Petit Citron will offer customers a quintessential taste of France to enjoy at home. With simple, authentic ingredients and inspired by traditional French recipes, just one bite will transport customers to a sun-dappled square in rural Provence.

The best way to translate it in English would be ‘afternoon tea’ but it’s not as formal. It’s very traditional, it’s very sacred and every single kid in France has a ‘gouter’. I still have a 'gouter' myself, maybe a biscuit or a coffee, if I have time. We’ve also done it with my children, since they were young,” Fred explains.
