About this deal

The 2.1-channel sound setup in the OLED807 does not benefit - directly, anyway - from Philips’ successful working relationship with UK hi-fi brand Bowers & Wilkins. That doesn’t stop it from sounding seriously good, though. Video processing is something Philips takes great pride in and the new Gen 6 P5 processor offers up some very good upscaling of lower resolution content to the 4K native resolution of the panel. It can, at times, look a little over-processed and digitally sharp when using some of the out-of-the-box presets (although not Filmmaker Mode), with edges looking a little too processed with some light ringing and fine detail missing. Some faces can also look overly processed with added sharpening around pores and lines that looks unnatural. However, using the Filmmaker (FMM) or Expert modes and making sure most of the edge enhancement features are switched off provides you with a nicely detailed and natural-looking upscaled image with no artefacts. Native 4K content in FMM does look sublime as you would expect.

This wouldn’t matter, of course, if you could just switch between picture presets and leave your involvement with the TV’s menus at that. As we’ve seen, though, consistently getting the best from the OLED807 means familiarising yourself with at least some parts of its picture adjustment menus. Its picture quality, meanwhile, takes a relatively aggressive approach that will win it many fans in both crowded electronics stores and living rooms – yet it also carries modes able to give you a more accurate picture if that’s your bag. Even its sound is way more powerful than that of most rivals. For many AV fans, the simple fact that the OLED807 is an OLED TV will be an immediate attraction. After all, the way each pixel in an OLED screen can make its own light, rather than having to share an external light with its neighbours as happens with LCD TVs, delivers peerless local contrast perfectly suited to a well-mastered movie. However, please note that the 48-inch OLED807 won't be able to match the same highs as this, because the panel can't get as bright at this size (it's the same for all 48-inch OLEDs) – this brightness applies to the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. The set also carries a Dolby Vision Game mode (though this only supports DV up to 60Hz, not 120Hz like LG's OLEDs), and provided you select its Monitor setting the OLED807 can deliver 4K 120Hz without suffering the half vertical resolution issue that has affected some premium Philips TVs. It offers strong HDR support (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision) but gaming features seem to have taken a hit. HDMI 2.1 is present but there's no eARC or Auto Low Latency Mode. What's more, resolution maxes out at 4K@60Hz so games won't run as smoothly as they might (if played at 4K@120Hz).

The 48-inch Philips 48OLED806 won 'best TV' at last year's What Hi-Fi Awards, so we've high hopes for the OLED807. The new range will be available in 48-, 55-, 65- and 77-inch screen sizes in the first half of 2022. Pricing is still under wraps. Overall, the OLED807 in the 48-inch screen size offers a compelling choice for a number of use cases and the performance is excellent, even given the fact it doesn’t have the OLED.EX heat dissipation panel that the larger screen sizes do have. Performance remains accurate for those who want it and the P5 in its 6th Gen configuration also offers plenty of image processing power for those who want all the bells and whistles switched on. Gaming is also well catered for with two full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports and good support for the latest standards for VRR and 4K/120 at full resolution. It offers something for everyone and does so with very decent image quality and features and comes recommended. Televizory Philips OLED se pyšní certifikací UL, která zaručuje obraz bez blikání a pouze příjemný jas. So, does the Philips 65-inch OLED807 offer up the image quality goods to compete as an ‘A’ brand in today’s TV market? Let’s find out… Philips has stayed loyal to the Android TV platform for a few years now, so it won't surprise you to hear that the company's 2022 smart TVs get the most recent version – Android TV 11. This features both Google Assistant Built-in, via push to talk on the remote, and Works with Alexa compatibility.

The Philips OLED807 is a cracking TV that stands out from the 4K OLED crowd thanks to its use of Ambilight technology

Ambilight remains the major USP feature and offers something no other manufacturer can provide and that includes the superb Bias light static mode with calibration options so you can watch without eye strain or getting tired when watching in dim surroundings. Plus, the new system adds in more accuracy with the colour palette from the individually controlled LED lights in the ‘Follow” modes, which can add more immersion for viewers and gamers who want it. The four sided system on the OLED807 is superb, as is the new Aurora still mode for when you are not watching TV but want the Ambient lighting effects with stills shown on the screen. The EX-inspired extra brightness also helps the OLED807 be less prone in its out-of-the-box state to losing subtle details in very dark scenes/areas. As is de rigueur in the annual cycle of TV releases, the OLED807 has an upgraded processor when compared to its predecessor. The so-called 6th Gen P5 brings with it what Philips refers to as “Ambient Intelligence”. This basically involves the TV adjusting its brightness, colour and contrast based on ambient lighting conditions. It works rather like Dolby Vision IQ, and is most useful when used to prevent a loss of shadow detail when watching the TV in a well-lit room. Unlike Dolby Vision IQ, it works with all signal types, though TVs that do support Dolby Vision IQ tend to also have a similar solution for non-Dolby video signals.

Android TV is also absent. Instead, this model uses the 'Saphi' operating system often found on Philips' more affordable European TVs. This could limit the number of streaming apps, but it's too early to say for sure. The set's bezel is significantly narrower than that of the OLED806, which itself was pretty slinky. This is made possible by Philips switching to one of the latest EX type of OLED panels. The frame is so skinny, in fact, that it plays beautifully with Philips' Ambilight system, making the coloured illumination that comes from all four sides feel even more connected with the images you're watching. Philips OLED807 features two HDMI 2.1 ports with support for 4K120 and VRR in combination with the latest game consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X. The TV automatically detects a game in the HDMI signal (ALLM) and switches to its fastest picture mode which reduces input lag to less than 16 ms (with a 4K 60Hz signal). At this time, we cannot measure input lag in VRR or 120Hz mode but it will be even lower here. Colour performance is equally impressive, with the 807 hitting 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space. This means you’re getting the full benefit of HDR’s wider colour gamut, and a saturated film such as The Greatest Showman really pops. Crucially, this colour gamut isn’t just wide but also very accurate, with all the colours hitting their saturation targets precisely. Last year’s Philips OLED806 was up there with the very best mid-range OLED TVs – but the OLED807 beats its predecessor in pretty much every way.
