About this deal

Growing your own food is a great way to become self-sufficient and contribute to sustainability. Growing seasonal produce ensures that your food is always fresh and available when you need it. Additionally, with the right knowledge and resources, one can become self-sufficient in their own food production. In this work, he shared tons of great ideas for a home garden, home economics, and inspiration from people who are truly living simple and good lives. He offers views on how we can make a better world. Mostly though, this is a very accessible account of how to be a homesteader and love and care for your land.

As the cold sets in and some parts of homesteading slow down for the season, I like to take mental vacations to other homesteads and farms through reading. Here are a few of my favorite inspirational reads for cold-weather that I hope will inspire you too! A Year Without the Grocery Store: A Step by Step Guide to Acquiring, Organizing, and Cooking Food Storage by Karen Morris ~ I was sad to learn that the author did not actually go a year without going to the grocery store to write this book. She did, however, write a beginners guide to bulk food storage that’s a great place to start if you’re trying to put up a years worth of food for long term (25+ year) storage without spending a lot of money. It’s a totally entertaining and well-written read. Plus it makes you (or at least me) feel like your life is easy by comparison. Additionally, it allows people to tap into their local community, forming strong relationships among individuals looking out for one another’s well-being. Community Support Networks

Self-sufficiency is a way of life that provides you with the resources to meet your needs and become more independent. Homesteading is one way of achieving this goal, as it requires very little money but can help you on your journey to becoming self-sufficient. Like Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, this is one of those books I re-visit annually to push myself to try new things and appreciate our alternative lifestyle even more. I don’t think any homesteading bookshelf is complete without this little gem within fingers reach whenever you need it. Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy from wind and convert it into usable electricity that can be stored in batteries or fed directly into an electrical grid. Winemaking can be just as technical as home brew beer, and depends even more on the quality of the ingredients. Energy self-sufficiency is a term used to describe the ability of an individual or community to sustain itself with energy resources. It refers to the capacity to produce enough energy from renewable sources, such as solar, wind and water power, to meet all its needs without relying on external sources.

This could involve investing in solar panel arrays and wind turbines to generate electricity locally, improving existing heating and cooking systems, so they use fewer fossil fuels; or developing new technologies that capture more efficient forms of renewable energy. Alternative Energy Sources: Solar, Wind, Hydro The main difference is that self-sufficient people are more likely to grow their own food, raise their animals and provide for themselves in a more hands-on manner. In contrast, people who are aiming to be self-reliant are more likely to rely on their own knowledge to get them through tough times. Great Sausage Recipes and Meat Curing by Rytek Kutas ~ Another great technical manual full of literally hundreds of recipes. For many people living in poverty, being able to provide basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter can be difficult without external support. Essential Guide to Radical Self Reliant Gardening by Will Bonsall ~ This is one of my favorite books, and I’ve already mentioned it twice before. Still, it’s one of the best gardening guides for homesteaders that intend to provide much of their own food, so it bares mentioning again.Easy cheese making recipes can be made at home in under an hour, things like mozzarella, ricotta and paneer, and they’re the perfect place to start for beginners. John Seymour (12 June 1914 – 14 September 2004) was a British author and pioneer in the self-sufficiency movement. In 1976, he wrote The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency. The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins ~ Not a topic that most people want to discuss, but if you truly want to “close the loop” and harvest abundant crops from your own land without outside inputs, then it’s important to look to yourself as a source of fertility. This discusses every aspect of humanure in an accessible and easy to implement way. I’m just covering lacto-fermentation books here, I’ll cover home brew beer and wine making books separately later on.)
