I could say hello to someone on two different days and get two completely different responses based on what else is going on in their lives. As a leader, that’s a tough thing for me to try and understand – how to build a culture that allows different types of people to thrive. How do you deal with failure and adversity? This powerful book about women, tech and daring to dream takes inspiration from Dr Imafidon's own experience and from the stories of other pioneers and innovators who have, against the odds, transformed technology. She's In CTRL is an inspirational narrative about how women must play a part in ensuring a future that's evenly distributed. I’m a doer but I’m not the type of person that puts pressure on myself to be the first or the best. That’s not really the way I live my life. My motivations have obviously changed as I’ve gotten older, but really, I’m just here for a good time. Some might assume you were put under pressure from people around you growing up. It’s interesting to hear you say you were just following what you were good at… People have told me that the book is really accessible. It’s easy to understand what I’m explaining. I wrote it not so that everyone transitions into tech, but so that everyone understands tech to do a better job and live a better life. People understanding devices is great, but do devices always understand the people?

Stemettes turned ten so there’s been a lot of celebrations! We’ve had a festival in Newcastle, we’ve got one coming up in London. There’ll be another one in Coventry later on in the year. I’ve done roundtables, also across London, Newcastle and Coventry, where Stemettes have been working for ten years.

All children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult while in the theatre. The Royal Institution reserves the right to refuse admission to an unaccompanied child under the age of 13. More than role models, I had the right people around me who wanted to open opportunities for me. I believe that if you can see it, then you can be it. For me, I could see the tech and the logic – this was my motivation. Do you think you went into STEM for your sheer love and enjoyment of it? Imafidon assumes no prior knowledge or understanding on the reader's part, explaining the very basics, such as the necessity of digital literacy - "A certain level of digital literacy is necessary to get along in life," she explains. This is redundant for Imafidon's core audience of technologically engaged young women, but perhaps that is no shortcoming for 'She's in CTRL', which primarily aims to teach, convince, and encourage people not already engaged with tech. The world needs more women in tech and, in this inspiring event, Dr Imafidon shows us not only why this is, but also how we can all play our part in ensuring a future that's evenly distributed.
