About this deal

This is the second of this author's works I have read. She has an easy to read style with a slight quirkiness, reminiscent of her presentation style on TV. I haven't seen the TV programme/series on which this book was based, but can envisage it from the structure of this book and the general style in which it comes across. In November 2020, the second series of Royal History's Biggest Fibs with Lucy Worsley aired on BBC2, covering the myths behind The FrenchRevolution, GeorgeIV and The RussianRevolution. I especially admired Worsley's elegant use of two essays - Thomas De Quincey's "On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts" (1827) and George Orwell's "Decline of the English Murder" (1946) - as the framing works between which her intellectual history unfolds.

In 2014, the three-part series The First Georgians: The German Kings Who Made Britain explored the contributions of the German-born kings GeorgeI and GeorgeII. The series explained why the Hanoverian George I came to be chosen as a British monarch, how he was succeeded by his very different son George II and why, without either, the current United Kingdom would likely be a very different place. The series emphasises the positive influence of these kings whilst showing the flaws in each. A Very British Romance, a three-part series for BBC Four, was based on the romantic novels and sought to uncover the forces shaping our very British idea of 'happily ever after' and how our feelings have been affected by social, political and cultural ideas. A Very British Murder is an extremely readable, sometimes gossipy survey of the development of crime/mystery literature in Britain, up to the Golden Age of Sayers and Christie. It examines why people loved a good murder story, and what kind of murder story they wanted, while also reflecting on some of the real murders that occurred and the anxieties surrounding them. A Very British Murder is a unique exploration of the art of crime, and a riveting investigation into the British soul by one of our finest historians.A Very British Murder — история о возникновении полиции и развитии детективного жанра: например, автор подобно рассказывает о прототипах героев Диккенса и преступлениях, которые оказали влияние на творчество Хичкока. Spinster detectives had a longer history. There was Hildegarde Withers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hildegarde_Withers Worsley also wrote the young-adult book Lady Mary, [27] a history-based book that details the life of MaryI, daughter of HenryVIII and CatherineofAragon; it follows her as a young Princess Mary during the time of the divorce of Mary's parents.A Very British Murder is Lucy Worsley's enthralling exploration of a curious national obsession. Our fascination with 'a good murder' -- from the Ratcliffe Highway Murders at the turn of the nineteenth century to Edith Thompson and Freddie Bywaters, hanged in 1922 for the murder of Edith's husband -- became a form of national entertainment, inspiring novels, plays and films, puppet shows and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism. This riveting investigation shows how during the birth of modern Britain murder entered our national psyche -- and has been a part of us ever since.
