Some of the old English words were a bit hard to read but I managed to get through the book. Beowulf is an entertaining book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, violence and action. It has evil, a set of monsters and a great journey. I think age 10+ would love this book. I adored reading Beowulf. I adore this book because it is a very adventurous, scary book .It includes action, some violence and is historical. I think boys would love to read this book, because of its different features { like the sadness, the revenge …} I liked the book , it was so good – I want to read it again and again ! I could really imagine I was Beowulf , saving lives and protecting the inn ocent from ferocious monsters! My favourite character was Wiglat h because he was loyal to his king and he didn’t run away whe n he needed them the most. He was extremely brave!

Planning has been adapted from several sources and fitted to the way in which English is taught in my school. There is no Week 4 planning, as this was assessment week, so it follows naturally onto Week 5. The following objectives are covered: This is a series of six lessons (including PP and worksheets) on Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo that focuses on different areas of the UKS2 N.C for Reading following CPD training on how to teach the N.C objectives whilst promoting a love reading. The N.C focus areas are:

In this retelling, British Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo breathes new vitality into the oldest English epic, originally written around 1000 A.D.--the tale of Beowulf, a Geat warrior who battles three evils so powerful that they destroy entire kingdoms. Standing head and shoulders above his comrades, Beowulf single-handedly saves Denmark from Grendel, a "merciless murderous ogre," as well as from his sea-hag mother. But it is Beowulf's third terrible battle, against the "death-dragon of the deep," in which he truly meets his match. Beowulf was a mighty hero who went on a quest to save Hereot {from gruesome villains} w hen he accidently found his match.I am not a scholar of Old English literature, so my research for this retelling was necessarily gleaned from other retellings and translations by poets and scholars and storytellers. Among many sources of inspiration for my own telling of Beowulf have been versions by the following writers and poets: Seamus Heaney, Rosemary Sutcliffe, Kevin Crossley-Holland, and Michael Alexander." --M.M.

Hear and listen well, and I will tell you a tale that has been told for a thousand years and more. it may be an old story, yet it troubles and terrifies us now as much as it ever did, for we still fear the evil that stalks out there in the darkness and beyond." Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown. urn:lcp:beowulf00mich:lcpdf:202d2d24-757c-4e97-a172-450fc3ccdf52 Extramarc OhioLINK Library Catalog Foldoutcount 0 Identifier beowulf00mich Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t8x93d40c Isbn 9780763632069 A unit of work (37 lessons - up to 50 hours of lessons ) for Year 5-6 pupils. Ideal for schools studying the Vikings/Anglo Saxons under the new curriculum. Children LOVE the language and horror elements of this story and produce quality written outcomes as a result.

I’ve used this text and resources with Year 4 several times and they are tried and tested winners at getting even the most reluctant of pupils to do some creative writing. Classic fiction, narrative poetry, Denmark, Old English, monsters, dragons, bravery, intrigue, betrayal, loyalty Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” In fifth-century Denmark, a murderous monster stalks the night, and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. Beowulf's terrifying quest to destroy Grendel, the foul fiend, a hideous sea-hag and a monstrous fire-dragon is the oldest surviving epic in British literature. Artfully retold and magnificently illustrated, this companion volume to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is made instantly accessible to children by a formidable children's book partnership. Text rationale: Complemented by Michael Foreman's vivid illustrations, this epic tale is skillfully spun, with both the accessibility and the integrity it takes to capture a new audience. Lovers of superheroes and monsters, compassionate rulers and fearsome battles will find this retelling as enthralling as it is tragic.
