Thanks to the huge success registered by My French Kitchen (2003), bestselling author Joanne Harris and food writer Fran Warde join forces once again to present a sweet and simple collection of recipes that are inspired by the rural markets of Gascony; highlighting the rustic, fresh flavors and the relaxed and mixed style. Looking for a safe haven and anonymity in the cobbled streets of Montmartre, Yanne and her two daughters live peacefully above their little chocolate shop. Her comfortable life however suddenly changes following the death of the loving and understanding abbess. Harris'] voice is crisp and sure, touching the edges of things with cool light . . . as reliably darling as [ Chocolat] . . . a well-crafted escape into a world where lessons can be learned and evil [can] be given the slip. Seattle Times After a single, unsuccessful year as an accountant, which she describes as "like being trapped in a Terry Gilliam movie", [2] she trained as a teacher at the University of Sheffield, and for 15 years she taught modern languages, mostly at Leeds Grammar School, a boys' independent school in Yorkshire. She also taught at Sheffield University, lecturing on aspects of French literature and film. During this period she worked on a number of book projects; The Evil Seed, Sleep, Pale Sister and Chocolat were published while she was still teaching. [3]

Harris has a lively and original talent. Sunday Times The language and the spell of Harris's characters are such that this, like Chocolat, is a novel one will return to again and again, as we do with those books that become our old and dear friends. Her writing style focuses on the senses, especially those of taste and smell. This may be due to the fact that Harris has a form of synaesthesia, in which she experiences colours as scents. [8]

What role do the travellers play in this story, and why do you think the author chose to include them? A bottle of home-brewed wine left to him by a long-vanished friend seems to provide the key to an old mystery. As the unusual properties of the strange brew take effect, Jay escapes to a derelict farmhouse in the French village of Lansquenet. There is nothing strange that sets them apart from the rest. There are no red sachets hanging by the door, and the wind has momentarily stopped. Harris was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, to an English father and a French mother. Both of her parents were teachers of modern languages and literature at a local grammar school. Her first language was French, which caused divisions between her English family, where nobody spoke French, and her French family, where nobody spoke English. Both families had turbulent histories and a tradition of strong women, kitchen gardening, storytelling, folklore and cookery. [ citation needed]. And when Effie starts uncovering the murderous depths of her husband's hypocrisy, her latent passion will explode to the surface.

Reinventing herself as Soeur Auguste, Juliette is determined to make a fresh start for herself and her young daughter, Fleur. I really enjoyed this. I liked the setting (England and France) and the magical quality of the story. I liked the old character, Joe and in my mind saw one of our library patrons playing his part. It made me want to read more of Harris's books. I like the way she conveys that there is more going on in our lives than meets the eye. And despite the fact that you can walk from one village to the other in an hour, the two places are poles apart.

Home brewed wine made by Joe takes unusual importance in the present time of the story, because it's only when Jay drinks it that he finds the courage to change what makes him unhappy. Guided by a kind of Joe's ghost, Jay leaves London and moves to a little rural village in France where he buys an abandoned farm and where he starts writing again, inspired by his mysterious neighbour, Marisa. The story itself is narrated by a bottle of wine. How does this narration allow the author to look at the perspectives of different characters? What does it add to the narrative? For generations, young men from wealthy families have attended St. Oswald's Grammar School for Boys, prepared for a life of accomplishment by the likes of Roy Straitley, the unconventional Classics teacher who has been a dominant figure in the school for more than three decades.
