About this deal

the writing wasn’t bad, but the typos were. though they don’t detract directly from the storyline, noticing one always pulls me out of a book a bit. hire a new editor lauren, you deserve better!!! 🩶 Lauren Roberts is a new author, thus I don’t want to judge her with the same standards I judge books by experienced authors since Roberts still has room to improve. That said, I also don’t want to not speak my mind since Goodreads is one of the few places I can be completely honest. So I’ll try to be nice while keeping my words true. All this said, Lauren Roberts’s writing has the potential to be good. There were times when I enjoyed myself. For example, when Kai woke up with the note, i can’t even explain how much i’m in love with kai and paedyn. their relationship is my new favorite thing in the world. THE TENSION. literally died dead.

kai azer is my new favorite book boyfriend. he gives off such a tristan dugray vibes ( if you know you know :)) and i’m literally living for it. i’m just so in love with confident, flirty and effortlessly funny men who are not scared to show interest. and he was it all. literally he is THE standard. powerless has every popular romantasy trope possible. you may love that and feel fulfilled by that. i do enjoy certain tropes, but relying on tropes leaves a lot of world-building and natural character development to be desired. This was a good decent book. it was just that I’ve seen it all before? I mean it’s really a strong debut with a solid storyline and interesting characters and world building. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. It didn’t add anything if you get what I mean. She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting. He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have... This was such an enjoyable read and a really strong debut!! 🤩🤩 If you're looking for a fantasy romance with fast pacing, Hunger Games vibes and a romance with TONS of chemistry, then this is definitely the book for you! I had a really fun time 💜💜🫶🫶The book is needlessly long, with self indulgent scene after scene that served little purpose to the plot or to further character growth. Yes, I know they're fun to write. But it became very repetitive and very boring very fast. The tropes are fun, knife to throat and whatever etc etc, but I have to wonder why there are like 4 different instances of it and why they're almost identical in purpose and tone. And, what's worse, they're very telling rather than showing. The author needed to kill some darlings, kill MANY darlings. If the Trials and the opponents don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn really is . . . completely Ordinary. The worldbuilding didn't survive too much of a thinky think. I don't think it was a good idea to introduce genocide and oppression without engaging with those ideas properly. It felt very much like this book was trying to be Hunger Games but it had as much depth as the Selection. (This review is getting long but I have so many issues with the reform revolutionaries in the selection and the violent vs nonviolent thing going on there). That feels so mean to say I'm sorry but also please. PLEASE. I can suspend my disbelief about the girl getting away with being an Ordinary, but I draw the line as using revolution as an aesthetic without real political worldbuilding behind it.

This was a really enjoyable fantasy romance!! 🤩🤩 super fast-paced and easy to read, major Hunger Games vibes and the romance had SO MUCH chemistry 💜💜🫶🫶 The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom of Ilya and shunned from society. No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as a Psychic to blend in with the Elites. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya's princes, Kai Azer, she's thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition showcasing the Elites' powers. No one knows this better than Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary posing as an Elite. When she unsuspectingly saves one of Ilya’s princes, Kai Azer, she’s thrown into the Purging Trials, a brutal competition to showcase her ‘Elite’ powers. bc i love red queen, i knew i would enjoy this book too! lauren was very true to her words that this book is if red queen and the hunger games had a baby. though powerless very much resembles her parents lol Only thing that was missing for me personally that would have brought this to a 5⭐️ would have been found family, true friendships being built. Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya... Red Queen meets The Hunger Games in the most epic and sizzling fantasy romance book of the year.
