About this deal

No matter what has your mind racing, you can always shift your mindset or gear your thoughts elsewhere with a few simple tactics.

I recently read a research report on the top 20 worries amongst the population. I was surprised that worrying about whether we worry too much wasn’t even on the list. Everything from getting old, to the illness of a pet, to saving enough money did make the list, however. Keep trying and working on things that interest you. You'll succeed more often than you might think, and begin to worry a lot less as you realize that 75% of success is just getting out there and trying. People who seem successful and happy are people just like you, except that they never let their worries stop them from giving things another shot.Your brain processes an average of 70,000 thoughts per day. The quality of those thoughts will make or break you. If you’re feeling sad or low, slap a big grin on your face and whistle a chipper tune. You’ll find it impossible to be blue when acting cheerful. But you don’t necessarily need to act outwardly happy; you can simply think happier thoughts instead.

People who have everything taken care of for them, such as coddled children, end up ill-equipped to function in the adult world, which means that sometimes not helping is actually the best help you can give. To me, that removes all the spice of life. You must be aware that however much critical thinking you apply to a decision, you may be wrong. This book has a common sense yet often forgotten central theme, which I have no doubt will help me keep much happier and more optimistic in my everyday life. Sometimes, some events are objectively negative; it is inevitable that, at some point in your life, you’ll have to deal with a broken relationship and, at another, even with the loss of a loved one.Try to be accepting when situations are out of your control. If you determine that there are no solutions or additional actions that you can bring to a situation, then choosing to accept what is out of your control and letting things go is the best thing to do. You may have learned to overthink due to childhood trauma. A coping mechanism to deal with stressful situations during your upbringing may turn on overthinking. Now, this is your go-to aid. You might expect something bad to happen even when things are going well. Many of our clients describe this as, ‘waiting for the other shoe to drop’ because you are used to living in a state of crisis. The next time somebody talks you down, don’t let it get to you. Stop worrying about criticism and take it as a compliment!

At certain points in life, our looping thoughts can be too much to withstand and it is during these times that we should reach out for help. Working with a therapist can help you find better strategies, new ideas, and new ways of thinking about the future. They can offer some practical tools, listen without judgment and support your process. Just like Lester Burnham (see Chapter 6 above), you need to start feeling gratitude for every single moment of your stupid, little life. If you realize halfway through a movie that it’s a bad one, you do the most reasonable thing you can: you turn it off; life is just too short to waste it on bad movies. The best part about box breathing is that it can be done from anywhere at any time. All you need is the right mindset.P 30. You cannot think your way out of depression. The reason is when your spirits are low you will generate negative thoughts. All you will see is negativity. You already know that your thoughts determine how you feel, but when you think in a depressed state of mind you will only make matters worse. As you breathe through this cycle, you’ll begin to notice your breath becoming more full and even. As these long, full breaths increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, your mind will begin to relax as all other thoughts and worries fade. The problem is twofold: very few people actually understand their thinking habits and even fewer the power of their own moods.
