A supporting prescribing guideline may be requested which must have been agreed by the relevant secondary care trust DTCs and approved by the Nottinghamshire APC. Use in confirmed staphylococcal infection e.g. recurrent folliculitis and impetiginised eczema as per Notts Emollient Formulary. They can be used to replace lost moisture whenever your skin feels dry or tight. They're very safe and you cannot overuse them. First line - Balneum ® Plus Cream (100g tube) - also contains lauromacrogols. Use only if emollient alone has not helped itching. Aqueous cream may be associated with skin reactions (stinging, burning, itching and redness) when used as a 'leave-on' emollient, often within 20 minutes of application, and especially in children with atopic eczema. See MHRA Drug Safety update March 2013.

Your skin feels dry, itchy and scaly when the outer layer of skin cells, known as the stratum corneum, loses too much water. The stratum corneum normally contains natural water-holding substances that retain water seeping up from the deeper layers of the skin. Water is also usually kept in the skin by a film of natural oil (sebum) and broken-down skin cells that slow down evaporation of water from the skin surface. Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. They cover the skin with a protective film to trap in moisture. Other first line options are Epimax ®ointment and Liquid & white soft paraffin ointment (Fifty:50®). It is available to buy from pharmacies and is sometimes prescribed by doctors for very dry skin conditions.

How to get emollients

an overheating, burning sensation or stinging that does not settle after a few days of treatment – usually caused by a reaction to a certain ingredient in the emollient Only for patients unable to use ointment/creams/lotions, or where application without touching skin is required, as per Notts Emollient Formulary. Reporting suspected adverse reactions after authorisation of the medicinal product is important. It allows continued monitoring of the benefit/risk balance of the medicinal product. Healthcare professionals are asked to report any suspected adverse reactions via the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard or search for MHRA Yellow Card in the Google Play or Apple App Store. By smoothing and softening the skin, moisturisers like emulsifying ointment can improve the absorption of other medicines that are applied to the skin. This is useful in conditions like eczema, because it improves the ability of other medicines, such as corticosteroid creams, to penetrate the skin and reduce inflammation.

It's especially important to regularly apply an emollient to your hands and face, as they're exposed to the elements more than any other part of your body.

How should I take/use this medication?

Certain activities, such as gardening, can irritate the skin. It may help to apply an emollient before doing these.

Your doctor or pharmacist will talk to you about which type of emollient will work best for your skin condition. At SFH if needed for other uses eg for lips, then use yellow soft paraffin, available from NHS supplies. The Gardiner family have been creating skincare products which combine our expertise in traditional formulations with the latest dermatological advances. Paraffin-free emollients should be reserved for patients who are intolerant/unsuitable for paraffin containing emollients due to increased fire hazard risks despite appropriate counselling. As per Nottinghamshire Emollient Formulary. Be careful not to slip when using emollients in a bath or shower, or on a tiled floor. Protect the floor with a non-slip mat, towel or sheet. Wear protective gloves, wash your bath or shower afterwards with hot water and washing-up liquid, then dry with a kitchen towel. Skin irritation from aqueous cream
