But wearing a sun shirt when recreating outdoors reduces UV radiation, which can lead to skin cancer. When the fabric is stretched, it can widen the space between the knits and let more UV light penetrate. To reduce the chance this happens, we recommend sizing up. A sun protection shirt should not fit like a base layer. After thru-hiking nearly 15,000 miles with almost no sun protection, I interviewed a University of Arizona sun cancer expert for a story on sun hats that I wrote for the New York Times/Wirecutter.
