New Year’s Day.May 28: Feast of Bendidia – a celebratory feast homage to the Goddess of the Moon and the Underworld. Exact time: 6:58 a.m. EST The Sabbats are divided into two groups. The Greater Sabbats; Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane and Lammas, fall on dates that represent high energy in the season. The Lesser Sabbats; Yule, Ostara, Litha and Mabon, fall on the equinoxes and solstices, the dates of which vary slightly from year to year, and they mark the changes of the four seasons. The Greater Sabbats are also known as the “cross-quarter” days as they mark the point between the solstice and the equinox.

Observed on fall equinox, Mabon is one of the four Lesser Sabbats. Modern pagans continue to celebrate the Earth’s abundance and the yearly harvests resulting from its abundance, as well as its ideal balance between day and night during the second of their three annual harvest festivals. Because this Sabbat is about showing gratitude for the gifts of the Earth, it’s also called Pagan Thanksgiving. Grand Sabbats are the solar equivalent of working with the moon during the waxing phase through Full moon. Lesser Sabbats are the solar equivalent of working with the new moon to set new workings into motion for that cycle. In spite of modern lifestyles and insulation from the natural world, we are still dependent upon the forces of nature, and contemporary Witches observe the Sabbats to establish and maintain a balance with nature. Sabbats are also a time for the Witch to look within, to reassess the life-path taken so far, and to reaffirm the directions she or he wishes to take in the future. There are many ways to incorporate Beltane into your life, making it one of the strongest Sabbats. How you observe the holiday is entirely up to you. If you prefer, you can celebrate alone or with family and friends.
