About this deal

The book went unnoticed for years until some parents and administrators discovered the prompts inside Friday. As a talking Chihuahua, what would you tell your humans about the new crying baby who now lives with you? Parents were outraged over a book of writing prompts given to high school students taking a college credit course called “Writing in the Liberal Arts II.”

You are a brand-new suicide-hotline counselor. Describe how you feel during the course of your first call. The teacher is wonderful and it seems like the teacher is being vilified a little bit too, and accused of grooming,” said Erika Raeth. It's not something my other child ever mentioned because it was such a non-issue, non-part of the class,” said Raeth. Raeth has another daughter, Anja, who currently takes the CCP writing course at Hudson High School.Even though Regan Raeth only graduated last year, she's already a second-semester junior at Kent State University. She was able to get those credits by taking the College Credit Plus and AP courses.

Nor has it fazed other parents of kids in the class who she said have spoken out in defense of the book’s use on social media.

News 5 reached out to the Hudson School Board to get their response to the calls for resignation from the mayor and other parents. Raeth said her teacher only used the book a few times a week to help students get creative with their writing at the beginning of classes and they never used any of the more explicit prompts.

Write the ad for an expensive new drug that improves bad posture. Now, list the possible side effects. One prompt instructs the writer to drink a beer and then write about the taste. Another said, “Write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom.”

The book provided to students called: 642 Things To Write About” contained writing prompts that encouraged students to write about sex, drinking, and murder. If you were given one extra hour today and you weren’t allowed to use it for anything you’d normally do (e.g.; eat, sleep, etc.), what would you do with that hour? You have a dream that you’ve murdered someone. Who is it, how and why did the murder happen, and what happens afterward? The Raeth family plans to attend the next school board meeting and share their perspective about the book being used in class.

The district immediately determined this writing resource should not be in the hands of our students, and on Monday, collected the books from the students enrolled in the course,” Herman said. “It is important to note that at no time were any of these inappropriate writing prompts assigned as part of the class.” At a banquet in Kazakhstan, you are greeted as a guest of honor and served the traditional sheep’s eyeball. Respectfully, you decline. You are then offered the sheep’s tongue, instead. What’s your excuse this time? The Raeths are also concerned about the teacher who oversees the writing course at Hudson High School. In a prepared statement, Superintendent Phil Herman said the “inappropriate and offensive writing prompts” were part of a supplemental resource used in the high school senior-level College Credit Plus writing sections. Many of the prompts in the book were benign, such as describing the worst Thanksgiving dish you’ve ever had, but according to Cleveland.com, one of the parents of a student that received the material read out several of the prompts that are clearly not meant for high school students. Mayor Craig Shubert spoke up at the meeting and gave the 5-member School Board an ultimatum — resign or be charged. If there’s one positive that can be attributed to the pandemic school closures, it’s that the “virtual learning” allowed parents to see what exactly was being taught to their kids. Public school enrollment dropped during the pandemic, and homeschooling has increased dramatically despite remaining a steady 3.3% of students since 2012. It’s not clear whether the board can be held criminally liable for material that was being used in a class.
