There are two expansions for Abyss that are available. The first is the Bombyx Abyss: Kraken which brings in some more corruption in the form of silver pearls. These are worth negative points and can be spent as regular pearls but only if you have no “normal” pearls available to spend. So getting rid of them is tough, but the cards that give you them are simply so powerful. The additions to the game that this offers are relatively small and subtle, which you would expect from a small box expansion, but I do enjoy playing with it still as a shakeup to the base game. Any lords used to control a location are placed under it so that their powers are hidden and no longer used, so timing when to gain a location is important. No Limits A Lord beneath a Location is no longer "free", and cannot be the target of any Power of another Lord. These Lords are still worth the Influence Points indicated on their cards at the end of the game. Any Lords used to control that Location lose all their Powers for the rest of the game, but still have their influence points. Any player recruits a Lord and the Court needs to be refilled, but there are not enough Lord cards left to completely fill the Court.

Most of the Lords have a Power that is applied immediately when the Lord is recruited, and only once. These Powers are marked with an arrow. Request support from the council – As ally cards build up in the council, it can be an attractive option to take a pile to boost your hand of allies. Strangely, there is no disadvantage to doing this, no price to pay, it would have possibly felt more in theme if you had to ‘bribe’ the council with a few pearls to gain their favour. Then the active player reveals 3 more cards that their opponents turn down or can no longer afford and which does not interest the active player either. Speaking of the Lords, I felt that there was really a nice variety in their abilities and I liked how they all fit into their own category. For example, the red Lords are all soldiers who have abilities that work against your opponents. The purple Lords are mages that help you work with the ally races, while the yellow Lords are farmers that are just worth extra influence points. They all felt different and useful in their own right. Players could focus on one type of Lord if they had a specific strategy they wanted to try out. This helps give the game a lot of replay value as each game seems to play out just a little differently. This is especially true do to the 20 different location tiles. You will most likely only see a fraction of those in any game. Playing Inscryption, but the goddamn Angler boss (the second boss) has beaten me so many times, I'm losing interest. His bullshit tactics are decidedly unfun.

Use all of your cunning to win or buy votes in the Council. Recruit the most influential Lords and abuse their powers to take control of the most strategic territories. Finally, impose yourself as the only one able to rule the Abyssal people! Abyss is a game of development, combination and collection in which players try to take control of strategic locations in an underwater city. To achieve this, players must develop on three levels: first by collecting allies, then using them to recruit Lords of the Abyss, who will then grant access to different parts of the city. Politicians are widely disliked and have few scruples. They're very useful to sway the control of Lords. When you have finished your mandatory actions, your turn ends and the next player to your left goes. The game ends when either any player has either recruited their 7th Lord or the Lord court needs to be refilled but can’t. At this point, the active player finishes their turn, each other player gets one last turn, and everyone counts up their influence points. The player with the most wins. Any cards you pass over while exploring get added to their council pile, this could leave your opponents with a great opportunity. The Location cards have some fun and interesting powers as well as additional end game scoring opportunities. They are nothing groundbreaking but they offer another means of scoring and a focus. If nobody wants to buy an Ally, you either add it to your hand and end your turn, or reveal the next card and sell it, and so on.You may spend Pearls to help recruit: you must still play at least one Ally from each of the required Races, but if the sum of the card values is not high enough, you can spend one Pearl for each missing point (Pearls are paid to the Treasury). Choose a Lord available at Court and play the exact number of Allies from your hand needed to buy it. If you have 3 or more keys, you must immediately take an available Location or draw 1-4 Locations, choose one and put the rest face up. I ended up really enjoying Abyss and seemed to constantly wanting to give it another play. I know 5 Tribes was Bruno Cathala’s hit game to come out of Gen Con 2014, but I think Abyss shouldn’t be overlooked. It ended up being a really clever card game with a good mix of interaction between players and mechanics. At its heart it may just be a simple set collection game, but there is a surprising amount of depth in this medium weight game. You may perform this action as many times as you want (as long as you can pay and there are empty spaces).
