Canon EOS 1100D is an advanced and affordable camera that encourages DSLR beginners with its user friendly interface. The camera is also quite robust with a 0.1 Sec start time. Internally, the 1100D is built around a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon’s 14-bit DIGIC 4 image processor. Combined, these enable the 1100D to shoot continuously at a maximum 3.2fps. Sensitivity stretches from ISO 100 to a very respectable ISO 6400.

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens handled chromatic aberrations well during the review. The examples shown here at 100% represent the absolute worst results you can expect from this lens mated to the EOS 1100D / T3. Colour is very much dependent on the choice of Picture Style, but we’re generally big fans of the bold, vibrant colours produced by Canon DSLRs and the 1100D is no exception. Used on the Automatic White Balance setting we found the 1100D perfectly capable of selecting an appropriate colour temperature in a whole range of situations, from bright sunlight outdoors to artificial tungsten light indoors. Image files can be given a star rating of between one and five. This helps no end with organisation once files have been loaded onto the computer.

Three years ago, this screen would have been well regarded, but by today’s standards the combination of size and resolution is disappointing. A viewing angle of 170° offers good visibility and the screen is bright enough to view in all but the brightest of situations. The bright viewfinder has 95% coverage and a magnification factor of 0.8x. Dioptre adjustment ranges from -2.5 to +0.5 There's a host of scene modes including Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait and, oddly enough for an interchangeable-lens camera, a close-up mode as well. The majority of these scene modes allow users who do not want to fiddle with shutter speeds, f-stops, white balance or ISO settings to let the camera know what type of photo they are about to take, which helps the EOS 1100D / T3 to optimise these settings for that particular subject. We struggled to see the point of the close-up mode though, as the quality of one's close-up shots depends more on the use of the right kinds of accessory - such as a macro lens and possibly a ring flash - than any camera setting. The new Feature Guide in the EOS 1100D’s menu system usefully provides a brief description of each setting and its effect.Despite its budget price-tag, the Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a responsive and intuitive DSLR that offers many of the key features of its bigger and more expensive sibling, the 600D / T3i, in a smaller and lighter body. This concludes our evaluation of the EOS 1100D's ergonomics, handling, feature set and performance. Let's take a look at its Image Quality next. The frame rate remains the same as before, with the 1100D offering 3fps in JPEG format, but the burst now lasts roughly 30% longer, giving up to 820 frames. Up to five raw files can be recorded at 2fps. The company is making no bones about the 1100D’s target entry-level audience – the camera is small, lightweight, easily navigated and feels like a budget-price model. White balance and colour A shooting mode dial on the top accesses the usual exposure modes as well as a handful of standard scene modes, such as portrait, landscape and sports. These modes automatically set the exposure to achieve the best results, as does creative auto and the A-DEP option for automatic depth of field. Video shooting can also be found on the dial. ISO 400 does a similarly good job of controlling any noise, although its just about possible, at 100% to see some softening in shadow areas (to the right of the robot’s head)
