About this deal

Compete to become the kingdom's next master builder; enlist help from the game's characters and collect gold to see your city take shape. You must deceive, betray and bluff your fellow builders if you are to create the kingdom's most impressive city and be crowned master builder.

The abilities associated with each character vary and include defensive, offensive, and bonus earning powers. The original set contained eight character cards: Citadels is a classic game of building where each player must lead and build a prosperous city by building city districts. Each round, each player takes on the role of one of the citadel characters providing abilities unique to them and has uses in different situations in the game. Perhaps you have the thief who can steal gold from another player or maybe you have the assassin who eliminates another character for the round! Navigator (No. 7) - After taking income, receive either four gold or four cards. They MAY NOT build any district cards this turn. The winner of the game is the player with the most points. In the case of a tie, compare the total points received only from step 1 of the above scoring process. If there is still a tie, the player with the most gold wins. You may not build a district such that you have two identical districts (two "Castle" cards, two "Market" cards, etc). in your city. The magician can either trade their entire hand of district cards with another player or discard any number of district cards to draw new ones. An expansion, The Dark City, was released for the game in 2004. The expansion adds 14 new purple district cards, some turn summary cards, and a wooden king token. The German, Dutch, Lithuanian and Estonian language editions of The Dark City also include the nine new character cards from the English-language edition.

Shuffle the basic district cards (structures with a yellow, blue, green or red symbol). Deal four cards to each player. Place the remaining cards facedown on the table. Queen (No. 9) - Receives three gold during their turn if they are sitting next to the player possessing the No. 4 character (King, Emperor, etc.). The thief is able to steal from a character. Note, the thief will not know exactly who they are stealing from since they announce a character, not a player. The thief earns the gold (if any) when the character starts their turn. Artist (No. 9) - May "beautify" up to two buildings by placing a gold on them. "Beautified" buildings both cost one more gold to destroy or trade AND score one more point at the end of the game. Each building may only be "beautified" once per game.

If applicable, you may now use your character's special ability, whatever that is, before you proceed to the main part of your turn. Here you may gather resources and you have a choice to take gold or choose a new district card. Then, finally, you may build a district in your city by paying the districts build cost in gold. Abbot (No. 5 and Blue) - May collect gold pieces equal to the number of blue buildings in their tableau (i.e. in their personal playing field). Forces the player with the most gold to give them 1 gold.

Diplomat (No. 8 and Red) - May collect gold pieces equal to the number of red buildings in their tableau (i.e. in their personal playing field). May "trade" districts in play with another player by paying the difference between the buildings. IF the building from the Diplomat's tableau is less expensive, no gold is "earned" by trading it with a more expensive building. The 2016 edition of Citadels includes twenty-seven characters — eight from the original Citadels, ten from the Dark City expansion, and nine new ones — along with thirty unique building districts, and the rulebook includes six preset lists of characters and districts beyond the starter list, each crafted to encourage a different style and intensity of gameplay. When a player 'builds' their eighth district card in their tableau, the game ends and points are tallied. Bonus points are awarded for building the maximum 8 districts, being the first to do so, and having a district of each possible color (purple, yellow, red, blue, green). When a player builds his eighth district, the game ends after the current round is completed. Use this scoring process to determine how many points each player receives:
