About this deal

Some camping ovens heat with white gas, a type of liquid fuel that’s more expensive but burns cleaner than propane. I think that if we were having an indoor propane setup we would maybe be less enthusiastic about the oven and would have evolved more like you have. We haven’t been in touch with much Dutch oven users and while we have tried some basic pot-in-a-campfire recipes, we have opted for a pressure cooker [ours is also anodized!]. Camping in high altitudes and little wood around for us makes the choice for a pressure cooker more obvious. And since space is always an issue we don’t want to add something that we would barely use… for now. You know things change and as we are driving around South America now we don’t find the need, but that might change if we are driving in another continent…

Ovens that use the heat from some external source. Here you will see some really simple yet effective designs. Here is again something ingenious from the Winnerwell brand. This stove attaches to the pipe so the heat from a wood-burning stove below goes around the inner box and heats it. This model here is for a 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) pipe but as far as I know, they build them in several sizes. That tiny thing can handle four different pots at the same time, which is more than enough for a three-course meal and then some. It’s also easier to use, it just needs a propane tank to work and it doesn’t get so hot that it will burn everything if you don’t let out the heat for two minutes. Coleman Vs. Camp Chef Oven: Final Thoughts There is not a lot to compare this oven to. The Camp Chef Outdoor Oven is a different product. It has it’s own burners built in, and therefore is a stand alone oven. While the Camp Chef Portable Outdoor Oven is self-serving with a butane tank, the Coleman oven depends on another stove. Both of the above ovens are very nice, but the Coleman adds a little different twist.

Insider Tips

Camping Stoves: If the portable oven you choose doesn’t include stovetop burners, but you still want the option to cook multiple dishes at once,a separate camping stove might be the way to go. Remember that you will need a separate fuel source hookup for your oven and your stove if you plan to use them at the same time. We’re discussing camping ovens here and a big part of their appeal is general portability. The easier it is to bring it when you’re going camping, the better the oven. Both portable ovens have convenient carry handles, so we’re off to a good start. The baking area is 26 x 12.5 inches (66 x 32 cm) and the total dimensions are 32 x 14 x 9 inches (81 x 36 x 23 cm). The oven weighs 41 lb (18.6 kg). If your portable camp oven comes with specialised pots, make sure you use them. Most are designed to optimise cooking and cleanup for your specific unit.

Christa pointed out while you can’t find whole-wheat flour, salvado de trigo is a common product, which is the husk of the wheat. In this manner we can sort of create our own whole-wheat/multi-grain version by combining the two, plus a number of other ingredients. Indeed, the limited space the oven takes when folded makes the oven a good buy, also for a small overland vehicle such as our Land Cruiser.

The biggest difference between these two ovens is the convenience of use. The Coleman oven doesn’t have its own heat source. Instead, you have to mount it on top of a stove, a gas burner, or anything similar that is able to generate enough heat for this oven. The most common form of stove is the traditional two-burner with a single, large cooking grate. But should you want a grill and stove combo, say, for cooking sausage and eggs, a hybrid option like the Camp Chef Rainier 2X is pretty appealing. Keep in mind that the grill portion takes up about 2/3 of the cooktop, which can swallow valuable space for fitting a large skillet or pot. Coleman’s Cascade 3-in-1 solves that problem with both burners and removable grill/griddle accessories. Similarly, stoves like the Camp Chef Explorer allow you to swap out accessory tops, including a barbecue box or pizza oven. Griddles are separate attachments that fit over top the burners, and just like at home, they’re great for cooking up items like pancakes or a grilled cheese.
