This is a complex case, as events turn the inquiries into new directions, and more people get probed. On holiday on the German island of Amrum Lena is sent to the neighbouring island of Föhr to help investigate the disappearance of a fourteen year old girl, Maria Logener. When Maria’s body is found on the beach with her wrist slashed Lena is not as sure as the others that it is suicide. The expedition members then sail to an abandoned navy communications school south of Seattle. A crewman sent ashore with oxygen tanks and protective gear discovers that although the city's residents have long since perished, some of the region's hydroelectric power is still working due to primitive automation technology. He finds that the mysterious radio signal is the result of a broken window sash swinging in the breeze and occasionally hitting a telegraph key. After a brief stop at Pearl Harbor, the remaining submariners return to Australia to live out what little time they have left.

The reason, I didn’t make this a 4 🌟, is simply that I felt the end was rushed. The body of the book was excellent but I felt like when it came to exposing the killer, the author was ready to hang up her hat. I needed a bit more at the end. That taaaa-daaaa moment you remember about the book weeks later. At the onset it seems as if the parents do not care - her father did not even join the group in its initial search and this strikes most people as odd but Lena the detective knows there is more than meets the eye. Is everyone actually shielding the murderer and how do they unravel the very few pieces of evidence they have to link to their killer. It follows the murder of Maria, a young girl from a deeply religious family. Detective Lina investigates the days and weeks before Maria’s death, but is faced with a lot of stonewalling from Maria’s community. They are used to judgment and aren’t particularly receptive to outsiders. As Detective Lina is making her rounds through the community, I felt for both her and the community at large. People often judge that which is different from what they know, and I hurt for the community that they felt scrutinized by virtue of their faith. DI Lena Lorenzen is on holiday with her boyfriend on the North Frisian island of Amrum when her boss calls. DS Warnke requests her help to look for a missing teenage girl. Maria Logener seems to have disappeared from a nearby island and Warnke’s wife is acquainted with her parents. The case is sensitive because the Logener family are members of a very conservative church which many consider to be a cult. Nobody on the small island of Föhr, especially Maria’s parents, are cooperative in the investigation and Lena runs into one obstacle after another. However, she sees herself in the fourteen-year-old and won’t give up until she gets to the truth about what really happened to Maria. The submarine approaches San Francisco, observing through the periscope that the city had been devastated and the Golden Gate Bridge has fallen. In contrast, the Puget Sound area, from which the strange radio signals are emanating, is found to have avoided destruction because of missile defences. One crew member, who is from Edmonds, Washington, which the expedition visits, jumps ship to spend his last days in his home town.Brian Melican. "On the Beach Book Review". The Neville Shute Foundation . Retrieved 15 October 2013. The mystery of what happened to Maria is suspenseful and the procedural elements of the book are very well done. Even when I didn’t understand some of the things Lena did in her personal life, I loved the way she handled the investigation and all the complications which arose. The investigation goes in circles for a little bit since so many of the local residents didn’t want to tell the police the truth. When everything finally comes out, it was a bit of a letdown considering the build-up throughout the book. However, I enjoyed the characters and the unique setting, and I would love to read additional books in this series. Kearney, Cresson (1987). Nuclear War Survival Skills. Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine. p.11. ISBN 0-942487-01-X. However, I found the ending to be somewhat anti-climatic and wondering where the result came from. All that time spent on puzzling it out for something and nothing? It felt a little out of left field and disappointing. The characters make their best efforts to enjoy what time remains to them, speaking of small pleasures and continuing their customary activities. The Holmeses plant a garden that they will never see; Moira initially acts as a socialite – drinking and partying excessively – but upon meeting Towers takes classes in typing and shorthand; Osborne and others organize a dangerous motor race that results in the violent deaths of several participants; elderly members of a gentlemen's club drink up the wine in the club's cellar, debate over whether to move the fishing season up, and fret about whether agriculturally destructive rabbits will survive human beings. Towers goes on a fishing trip with Moira Davidson but they do not become intimate, as he chooses to remain loyal to his dead wife, a decision Moira accepts.
