About this deal

Distilled at a small family-run distillery that makes some of the most popular rums in Barbados, every bottle of Foursquare Spiced Rum is a hand-crafted blend of fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and the distiller’s art. Refreshingly smooth on ice, Foursquare Spiced doesn’t contain the added sugar cane syrup commonly found in many other spiced rums. Foursquare Spiced Rum is an aged rum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg gently blended in at the distillery. The actual recipe is a family secret passed down through five generations. It is bottled in Hand Crafted European glass bottles with a hand dipped wax seal. The Rum heralds from Barbados – the island where rum was born.

Which is not to say I am not really enjoying this rum. I am, it is a great rum and one which will stand up to anything else on the market at the moment. It’s competition for a space on my shelf comes from its own brothers though. With so many recent releases comparisons will be sought. I find both this and Doorly’s 12 to be slightly more “wood driven” than some of the Exceptional Cask series. This is for example more woody than the very Fruity Premise of Zinfandel Cask rums. More oak and less vanilla and sweet fruit.Foursquare was built on the premises of former sugar factory from 1636. This distillery is designed and built to be highly economic and environment-friendly, using atypical barrels and blending original rums. They are known to produce non-sweetened, non-flavoured rums with minimum of added colour. If they do this, they clearly state it on the bottle. The story of the rum and its name Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years is as the name suggest a very fine rum. For most other producers this would be the jewel in the crown. There best efforts. for Foursquare it’s just another great rum. The aroma of the rum teases the nose with notes of vanilla, caramel, dried apples, banana, baking spices, cinnamon and subtle smoky oak.

This rum personifies everything I love about Barbados rum products and is one of my favorite discoveries of 2016. During my friendly disputes with rum purists, I was recommended Doorly’s. It was said to be a great transition rum from sweet to unsweetened rums for a fair price. So I bought it, tried it for some time and finally got to write my review today. So, what about Doorly’s from the Foursquare distillery, owned by the rum guru, Richard Seal? About Foursquare Distillery The Doorly’s Rum line is produced at the Foursquare Distillery in Barbados by Richard Seale and his team of experts. Using both column and pot still rums, this 12 year rum is aged using a combination of American White Oak Bourbon barrels and Madeira casks. The rum is then blended to 40% abv and bottled in 700mL and 750 mL depending on which region of the world it is being sold in. Differences from the rest of the Doorly’s range come with the new box (as pictured) which is an improvement on the box used for the Doorly’s 12. The box can now act as a total cover for the rum but can also be used to present the rum. Should you wish to do such a thing.

It has an almost charred note to it. Little bursts of vanilla and some ginger fade in an out of the mix. It’s not the most complex Foursquare nose I have had recently but it has a nice balance and the notes that are present are nicely done. However you choose to imbibe it, this rum is a true stand out in the 12 year old category and a must for anyone who enjoys rums from Barbados. Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years is a blend of Pot and Column distilled rum. The rum has been aged for 14 years in ex-bourbon casks. A portion of the blend was aged in ex-Madeira casks. As with all Foursquare products there are no hidden nasties in the bottle – just rum and a bit of Caramel colouring which is disclosed on the rear label. In other words, the taste of this rum is certainly not simple and you have to get used to it. The notes come gradually and I recommend a repeated tasting before reaching a final verdict. After about a month of tasting it, I find it excellent, but the path was not an easy one. I am glad to have given it other chances. The price and final verdict
