I guess I can't be sure, but to me it makes a lot of sense that this song is about death or Thanatos or dwelling on mortality... The main scene with the ‘River Man’ is pin-drop perfect. Triana delivered such a stunning character awaiting in that cabin, that each sentence held weight. I was grinning from ear-to-ear as it was described and when the ‘River Man’ had a meeting with both Lori and her sister, I knew the ending was going to be vicious. His fiction has appeared in countless magazines and anthologies and has been translated into multiple languages, drawing praise from Publisher's Weekly, Cemetery Dance, Rue Morgue, Scream, The Ginger Nuts of Horror and others. I think that means that she thought of a happy memory, and it made her happy for a moment, enough for her to forget the pain and unhappiness she was feeling. I CAN NOT BELIEVE I WASTED PRECIOUS TIME ON THIS BOOK. AND I KNEW IT GOING IN THAT IT MIGHT BE A LET DOWN SO I ACTIVELY LOOKED FOR SPOILERS. AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO EVEN DO THAT CORRECTLY SO FOR THOSE WHO MAY GO INTO THIS AND ARE OVERLY BORED AND WANT PROPER SPOILERS. YOUVE COME TO THE RIGHT GIRL, CAUSE I HAVE TIME TODAY I thought the setting could save it; deep forests with oldie blues overtones that, in other works (namely, Christopher Buehlman's Those Across the River) are written far better than here. Lori has made a connection with a repugnant prisoner called Edmund, and the true, sordid nature of their relationship is revealed through a series of letters interspersed throughout the chapters. He takes advantage of the extremely unhealthy obsession she has forged with him by assigning her a seemingly dangerous quest: to retrieve a specific item and deliver it to a mysterious character known only as The River Man. Superb extreme horror writing that really delivers on providing a chilling and quite simply 'spine-tingling' experience in the grim and macabre world of the dark arts and beyond.

What I liked: Triana is a Splatterpunk Award winner writing, so you know immediately that things will not be pretty. And while there are moments of beauty, sentences showing true love between characters, ‘Gone to See the River Man’ is at its core a story covered in rust and rot.We are bombarded with a romanticised depiction of a person with a brain injury, all cute childishness and blind loyalty, without as much of a hint at the grim reality of caring for an adult with those difficulties. Edmund tells her she must go to his cabin in the woods of Killen and retrieve a key to deliver to a mysterious figure known only as The River Man.

Lori has a rather morbid hobby, she writes to serial killers and has an impressive collection of letters from previous correspondences. When the story begins, she is on the way to prison to meet Edmund Cox. Lori is in love with Edmund, even though she knows he has tortured and killed many women, with a special fondness for those from the Far East. As the story unfolds, some of the letters, written by both Lori and Edmund, are dropped into the story. When the pair meet, Edmund gives Lori a mission, or a test, and this lies at the dark core of Gone to See the River Man.
