About this deal

Paula's Choice Omega+ Complex Cleansing Balm is a step above for a few reasons: For starters, it comes in a squeeze tube, which makes it more convenient than most of the other cleansing balms on this list. Additionally, it’s fragrance-free, so it’s very gentle, making it great for all skin types, but especially those that are more sensitive/reactive. Our tester has a balanced skin type (not too dry, not oily) and it made her skin feel very soft and moisturized. "I could go much longer without a moisturizer compared to other cleansing products that make your skin dry after you use them," she says.

I’ve never really used makeup wipes, but I did use quite a lot of cotton pads, which isn’t great for the environment either; I like to replace them with reusable products.

“They wanted to create ‘luxury-quality’ skincare that was transparent, interesting and accesibles.”

Beloved by Brooke Shields, this cleansing balm is fortified with a multitude of oils like sunflower, avocado, and jojoba. Ingredients like turmeric help to brighten the skin while gentle exfoliating acids like lactic and azelaic help reveal smoother, more even skin. We found this balm to be particularly oily and creamy, which made its consistency especially pleasant on dry skin. It spread easily and left our skin feeling soft and smooth as well as deeply moisturized. One tester has sensitive skin that can appear red after cleansing, but the True Botanicals balm left her skin feeling noticeably soft with no redness.

One thing to note, though, is that because it’s infused with so many essential oils, it does feel a bit oily. Our tester has oily, acne-prone skin and enjoyed using it, albeit sparingly. She thinks it's best suited for those with normal to dry skin.Of all the cleansing balms available, there are plenty of inexpensive options. In fact, some of our experts' favorites are not the higher priced brands. "As a dermatologist who also formulates skincare products, I think a wide variety of products, from over-the-counter drugstore brands to medical-grade skincare, can be effective," says Mona Mislankar, MD, FAAD, a board certified dermatologist and co-founder of Oath MD. "The more costly it is does not tell us much about the product at all; the formulation is the most important." Ingredients Out of all of the balms we tested, this product stood out to us the most for its consistency, cleansing ability, and for the way it left our skin feeling post-cleanse — in fact, it earned a perfect score across all of our testing categories. Compared with some balms on the market, we found there to be no oily residue left behind from this product. One tester even noted that the balm removed all traces of makeup, even that which was "baked and caked" on. We even found that our skin felt more moisturized and supple after using it; the same tester noted that her skin had been feeling extra dry due to retinol use, but that this balm has been "fantastic" for gently cleansing her sensitive skin while also restoring moisture. She also noticed an overall improvement in her skin's clarity and tone. It removed some oiliness but did not strip my skin or make it feel dry and taut,” she assures us. In fact, she says that it works so well that she feels it performs perfectly on its own, ridding the need for a double cleanse. “My skin looks and feels great after using this,” she marvels. “I feel like I've done no damage to my skin since I barely even needed to scrub.” One thing she points out, though, is that it does have a faint floral scent. So, sensitive-nosed skincare lovers, beware. When it's time to remove the day's makeup — and dirt, oil, and everything else you don't want to go to sleep wearing — a cleansing balm may be a great addition to your nighttime routine. "A cleansing balm is an oil-based formula that helps break down even the most stubborn makeup without any tugging," L.A.-based makeup artist and content creator Ourfa Zinali tells PEOPLE Tested. "It does the same thing a cleansing oil does, however, it's less messy; think of them as sisters. It can also be used on bare skin to remove any impurities, SPF, etc. at the end of your day."

Our tester reports having very dry skin — "I haven't tried many cleansers that don't leave me feeling stripped and dry (yes, even cleansing balms)" — but this one left her feeling soft with “some of the most minimal drying that I've ever experienced." She's dubbed herself a huge fan. Makeup and grime easily melted away, though some waterproof mascara remained and needed a separate eye makeup remover to fully get off. "I've used other cleansers before that do take off the same mascara without fail. However, I would use this balm before those because of how well it [moisturizes]," our tester says. Alyssa Kaplan is an experienced writer in the beauty industry and product tester specializing in cosmetics. She has many cleansing balms, including several on this list. She received a bachelor’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she studied marketing and product development in the cosmetics industry as well as fashion business marketing. Alyssa has been a commerce writer at Byrdie since 2022, where she covers all things beauty. For this story, she evaluated the testing insights from our testers, who tried 30 cleansing balms during a two-week period. She also sought expertise from Mona Mislankar, MD, FAAD, a board certified dermatologist and co-founder of Oath MD, celebrity makeup artist Kristine Studden, and L.A.-based makeup artist and content creator Ourfa Zinali.

If you love the ritual of a double cleanse and want to add a cleansing balm to your routine, look no further than the Wander Beauty B.O.M Voyage Cleansing Balm. Designed with a texture similar to petroleum jelly, the balm emulsifies effortlessly into skin to remove all non-waterproof makeup and sunscreen. “The texture makes it easier to rub around the eyes, but it didn’t remove my waterproof mascara,” admits our tester. Though she wasn’t able to double cleanse during the test, she thinks this product would be the perfect first step to any cleansing routine because it left her skin feeling extremely soft. “This would work great as part of a team of products, but individually, I think you could find better out there.”

Though our tester didn’t have the best experience, we felt it was important to mention it because many of our editors swear by this balm and think it’s still a stellar option. This cleansing balm is incredibly well-loved in the beauty community, and its popularity is absolutely justified. The most notable thing about it is its heavenly texture—it’s like a hybrid of a solid balm and a cream, making it both pillowy soft, and workable. It’s formulated with a blend of nine different hydrating oils, ensuring that it won’t strip the skin of moisture as it does its job. This eliminates fillers that may contain microplastics and other irritants that will eventually wash down into the ocean, which can damage the ecosystem. About The Cleansing Balm To summarise my JUNO Skin Cleansing Balm review, I think the cleansing balm is great! I really love the fresh scent, how easy it is to apply, how the formula turns into an oil, and easily removes all my makeup and SPF.

It effectively removes makeup, SPF, and grease, and we loved how seamlessly it transitioned from a balm to an oil to a milky consistency—it made using it foolproof. Because the formula isn’t overly oily, isn’t dry and crumbly, and doesn’t contain exfoliating acids, it’s a great choice regardless of your skin type. It’s effective and soothing, and the formula feels luxurious thanks to the gorgeous texture, but it is quite pricey compared to other similar options on the market, which is why we're naming it our runner-up. We recommend this splurge with the caveat that it may not fully remove all makeup; however, the delivery system, quality of ingredients, and the way it left our skin feeling is worth the trial. This JUNOCO Cleansing Cookie is SO soft! It feels amazing on the skin and is not irritating at all. After I massaged for a bit, I grabbed my JUNOCO Cleansing Cookie, wet it (lukewarm water), and used it to take off the residue. My skin feels fresh, clean, and soft after using the JUNOCO Cleansing Balm! Effectiveness After researching highly-rated options, we selected nearly two dozen to take home and use over the course of two weeks. Once we read the manufacturer's instructions, we used the products as directed to remove makeup, SPF, and dirt at the end of the day. For the purpose of this test, we did not follow up with another cleanser as part of a double cleansing routine, although this is often recommended. After using their cleansing balm, each tester evaluated and rated it based on consistency, oiliness, hydration, cleansing ability, and appearance, and those that scored highest appear on this list.
