About this deal

For video, I tend to shoot mostly within the Like709 color profile, as that gives me a consistent look in terms of contrast and colour in most shooting scenarios. But another great feature of the S5II and S5IIX is the ability to load LUTs into the camera and actually record your videos and photos with your own specific look. RealTime LUT can be a decent time saver for some people, especially those who shoot in their own environment with the same lighting setup and just want their finished look captured in camera. You can also preview LUTs, with V-log view assist, so you can capture your content flat, while previewing what it will look like with your look-up table of choice. There’s also a clutch of video-centric display options shutter angle, waveform, vectorscope, and histogram. As you’d expect, the S5IIX’s screen preview matches the captured image/video well but as usual, it can be hard to see some details in bright conditions. This makes an external monitor with greater brightness and/or a hood an attractive option in some instances. A new file will be created to continue recording if the continuous recording time exceeds the following conditions.

Panasonic introduces LUMIX S5IIX and LUMIX S5II mirrorless

Panasonic Lumix S5II: full-sensor internal 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (3:2) and 5.9K (16:9) footage at 30fps, 4:2:2 C4K and 4K at up to 60fps What the company has said is that its algorithms have been re-worked and that the camera assesses camera motion more precisely. We've been impressed with what we've seen from the S5 II so far, in terms of keeping both stills still and video clips smooth. The Boost IS mode, which tries to cancel all movement for a tripod-like video look, is particularly impressive. Ultimately, though, the S5 II seems likely to succeed or fail based on its AF performance. There's little reason to doubt it'll be a capable video camera, but the effectiveness of its revised AF system will help define how easy it is to shoot with for both stills and video, and in that department it's squaring up against some very capable competition. The LUMIX S5IIx will be available from June 2023 as a body only, as well as S 20-60mm lens kits and S 20-60mm with S 50mm F1.8 Twin lens kits.

FAQs:

Image quality is broadly comparable, with the Sony offering slightly better detail capture at low ISO but slipping a little behind in low light conditions. The Sony offers the most impressive battery life but also the weakest rolling shutter performance in video, making it more difficult than ever to choose between the four cameras. The biggest news is the inclusion of on-sensor phase detection: a technology Panasonic has not previously used. Phase detection essentially works by generating two views of the scene from slightly different perspectives (typically by forming separate images that 'look' through the left and right sides of the lens) and comparing them. Just as with human vision that uses two eyes set apart from one another, this enables the camera to establish an understanding of distance and depth in the scene. To withstand heavy field use, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are composed of a magnesium alloy full die-cast front / rear frame and is splash-resistant 12 and dust-resistant. Wi-Fi 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac) 13 and 2.4 GHz (IEEE802.11b/g/n) effectively provide a- secure and stable connection on smartphones, tablets, and other devices on location for smooth remote control. The transmission speed of photo/video data is also increased by using the 5 GHz band. Compatibility with Bluetooth 5.0 (called BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) enables constant connection with a smartphone or tablet with minimum power consumption. The settings of LUMIX S5II and S5IIX camera can be copied and transmitted wirelessly to other LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras when using multiple LUMIX S5II and S5IIX cameras. The LUMIX Sync application for iOS/Android devices allows remote control of the camera using a smartphone or a tablet via easy wireless connection. In addition to wireless control via a Remote Shutter DMW-RS2 (sold separately), application software LUMIX Tether enables tethered shooting via USB. Users can control the camera by connecting it to a PC via USB. It lets them view the image on a large PC screen while shooting. Both the S5II and the S5IIX feature a new 24.2MP CMOS sensor and L2 technology image engine. With twice the processing speed of the LUMIX S5, these new cameras can capture video at resolutions up to 6K at up to 30 frames per second. For stills shooting, the cameras support burst shooting at up to 30 fps. High frame rate recording is also supported at up to 120 fps in 4K or 180 fps in 1080.

Panasonic is going to sell this to Panasonic users, NOT to anybody else. Its a Panasonic camera for Panasonic users, like Pentax users are Pentax users. The userbase won't grown only shrink, due to poor lens line-up and no 3rd party lens support'. The Panasonic Lumix S5II and Panasonic Lumix S5IIX were both announced at CES on 4th January 2023. The two cameras have a lot in common, but the S5IIX has a few extra features that may appeal to dedicated videographers. However, it’s not slated to go on sale until mid-May 2023 whereas the S5II went on sale in January 2023. With that in mind, we’re going to compare the key features of the two cameras and pull out their differences. Panasonic Lumix S5II Panasonic Lumix S5IIX Sensor Panasonic has also improved its image stabilization system, promising a performance twice as effective as in the S5. For its revised system it's adopted the branding 'Active IS,' though it hasn't been very specific about how these improvements have been achieved. The S5 II does not come with its own charger and instead used the USB-PD standard to allow in-camera charging, operation or operation and charging, when connected to high-current power sources.

S5IIX - Camera Jabber Panasonic Lumix S5II vs S5IIX - Camera Jabber

Tying-in with the S5 II's ability to capture open-gate and 4:3 APS-C footage is a good selection of tools to support shooting with anamorphic lenses. As on previous Panasonic models, the S5 II can stretch the footage horizontally to give a real-time 'desqueezed' preview for a wide variety of squeeze factors. The camera can then plot safe-zone markers for various output aspect ratios over the top of this view, so you know you're capturing the action in a part of the frame that will be used in your final footage. The Lumix DC-S5 II reminds me of the lenticular prints sold in museum gift shops, which show a different image depending on the angle from which you view them. From one perspective it appears to be the two-year-old S5 with phase detection added, but looked at from a different position, its specs make it look like a credible competitor to Canon's recent EOS R6 II (which we consider to be the best of the current enthusiast full-frame bunch). The S5 II also sees its second card slot upgraded to the UHS-II standard, allowing the use of faster SD cards in both slots. Notably, even with the fastest V90-rated cards, UHS-II isn't fast enough to record all the S5 IIX's video modes, with the most demanding of its All-I capture modes and all its 4K and 5.8K ProRes modes requiring the use of an external SSD. Panasonic says it's been working with third-party accessory makers to provide useful ways to attach popular SSDs to the camera. Panasonic hasn’t made the Lumix S5IIX or S5 quite as small as the original S5, but at 134.3×102.3×90.1mm and 740g (with memory card, hot shoe cover and battery) it’s still significantly smaller and lighter than cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix S1R and S1.

There's no separate charger with the S5 II but the Type 3.2 Gen 2 USB port can be used to charge, power or power and charge the camera. Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II / DC-S5 IIX initial review

Image stabilization has been a staple strength of Lumix cameras since the release of the GH5 and the S5II X raises the bar further still with the inclusion of Active I.S.. Utilizing a combination of upgraded hardware and more intuitive algorithms, the S5IIX anticipates and counteracts the movements associated with walking and holding telephoto lenses. This delivers smoother footage when filming while walking and allows you to handhold shots with uncanny levels of stability. When combined with a compatible lens, like the Lumix S 24-105, which has stabilization built into it, the S5II X can offer up to 6.5 stops of correction. The Panasonic LUMIX S Series boasts a total lineup of 14 lenses including new LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO (S-R1428) according to the purpose. Moreover, the L-Mount system provides the best assortment of full-frame lenses to choose from, for limitless spectrum of creative possibilities. Color shading correction helps improve image quality when other manufacturer’s lenses including old lenses are used with or without using a Mount Adaptor. Furthermore, LUMIX S5II and S5IIX memorize the name and its focal length of analog lenses such as anamorphic lenses or old lenses to provide suitable setting of camera’s in-body image stabilizer automatically when those lenses are used. 6. Future firmware update The S5 II builds on the video capabilities of the S5, despite using a chip with similar ~21ms readout times for its 16:9 footage. The S5 IIX will offer a broader range of video capabilities than any of the other current models, at a lower introductory price than either the Sony or Canon offerings. The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II is an update to the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5, their mid-range full-frame stills and video mirrorless camera. The latest version adds a new 24MP CMOS sensor with phase detection autofocus, a new mode of IS for video, an improved burst mode, and a new processing engine created under the L² partnership with Leica. It joins a growing number of bodies that use the L mount shared with Leica and Sigma. Panasonic LUMIX Product Specialist, Matt, will be in Wilkinson Cameras stores over the next few weeks so you can have a first-look and hands-on of the new LUMIX S5II. Come and try it out for yourself and get expert advice from Matt. Don't forget to bring your old equipment with you if you're planning to part-exchange. Our in-store teams can inspect your equipment and arrange a quote for you while you see if the LUMIX S5II is the camera for you! LUMIX S5II in-store demo days: Telling the camera the squeeze ratio of your lens also allows the S5 II to adjust its image stabilization system to accommodate the differing effective focal lengths of your vertical and horizontal capture, improving the stabilization performance. LUT-applied shooting The S5IIX is also pretty snappy at spotting an animal in the frame, but it doesn’t target the eyes so you don’t always get the focus where you want it. In some cases you may need to switch to using a small AF point. Panasonic’s full-frame Lumix system unfairly goes under the radar, compared to alternatives from the likes of Sony and Canon; but if Panasonic wasn’t already being taken seriously, it should be now. Put simply, I can trust the Lumix S5 II as a reliable tool for creating high-quality videos and stills, and like my GH5, it represents excellent value for money.
