The thing I’ve been hoping for is that it’ll include the Chevy Mystery Hour episode with Bert Freed (and I’ve been reply-guying Kino-Lorber about it just to get it on their radar). There aren’t really any “jokes” per se that Falk delivers, just characterization, so I’m leaning toward the bit all coming from Peter. I’ve rewatched each and every “classic era” episode on DVD AND BLU-RAY (the Japanese box) and I can confirm that the Blu-ray episodes are 100% FULLY UNCUT with no edits whatsoever! My wife and I just got done watching the entire series and though the earlier (first five or six years) were the best for us, too, some of the very last ones were surprisingly good.

According to Frank Tarzi, VP of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber, there are two Columbo boxsets in the works: one featuring the ‘classic era’ 1968-78 episodes; and the second containing the 1989-2003 revival episodes. Here’s hoping the likes of Steven Spielberg, Lee Grant, Dick Van Dyke, William Shatner, Clive Revill, Susan Clark and Trish Van Devere may pop up on the audio tracks to provide first-hand commentary on the filming of the show, too.It would be a major coup for Kino-Lorber to obtain the rights for disseminating it to a wide audience, but it certainly would goose the Blu-Ray sales to the Columbo-hardcore. The people producing these boxsets haven’t promised interviews or commentary from Spielberg or any of the stars who played murderers. I also love the additional insight that this site provides, but I can’t fathom how you missed Columbo during it’s initial run and syndicated reruns. Oh, one more thing… it would be great if Kino-Lorber offered each set as either a standard or deluxe box. I need to take a look at the whole series from the beginning, it will be like seeing the episodes for the first time at this point.

From its intricate plots full of details and clues to the great performances of classic characters portrayed by the best. I was also a fan of McCloud and to a lesser extent, McMillan and Wife, but Columbo was always my favorite of the 70s TV detectives. I sometimes read along as the episode progresses and other times I wait until it’s over and use the commentary to fill in the blanks. The ‘classic era’ of Columbo was given new transfers from the original camera negatives around 2011-12, the versions you see on television now in other words. And perhaps not only once… Thanks to your pages we have been able to try the Columbo’s, and now we can easily see which one’s we’ve already seen and which ones not yet.Previously only a highly expensive Japanese import box set has been available on Blu-ray, which I actually owned for a bit. But he’s very natural and unforced on the roast, as befits someone who is quite comfortable in the character’s skin. hopefully the new columbo blu ray sets leave everything in tact and do not reduce playing time significantly by cutting out scenes from many episodes. With so many of the 70’s stars obviously being unavailable, it would be nice to hear commentary from certain Columbo “experts”, hint hint, nudge nudge, Columbophile.
