About this deal

It might sound like a small difference, but that’s four times the colour data of regular 8-bit video, for smoother gradations in tone and less risk of banding. You can switch to 6K (18MP) or 4K (8MP) Photo mode to snap JPGs at 30 or 60fps, respectively, with the electronic shutter—focus is fixed for the sequence. Now you can join the facebook group to share your photography and advice, ask and answer questions that arise and help each others! It offered gorgeous 4K footage quality, a wide variety of shooting options and good handling, as well as valuable features like in-body image stabilization and dual SD card slots. The GH5’s buffer capacity is already pretty good, at 60+ raw files or 600+ JPEGs, but the new GH II leaps ahead with 108+ raw files or 999+ JPEGs.

That leaves the GH5 II as the only game in town for anybody that wants a high-quality mirrorless camera with wireless live streaming capabilities. At ISO 1600 and above, the GH5 II starts to trail its rivals, capturing as much as 2 stops less dynamic range than the full-frame Panasonic Lumix S5 when you reach ISO 25600. Use a card with SD Speed Class with ""Class 4"" or higher when recording motion pictures in [AVCHD] or [MP4(under 28Mbps)]. megapixels is enough for many kinds of stills photography, and when combined with the GH5 II’s 4K 60p video capability, pre-installed V-Log L profile, support for C4K, VFR (Variable Frame Rates), 10-bit internal recording and more, it’s a serious video tool too. It’s also a lot easier to stabilise a smaller sensor than a large one, and get the kind of smooth handheld run and gun style video that’s so much in demand right now from vloggers and content creators. If you're using a lens made for extra-wide aspect ratios, you have the option of setting the camera to 4K30 or 6K30. The interface might be very clear, but you’ll still need to spend some time working out where the options are and what they do.

If you focus manually or like to select your own AF point, however – and you can do this while filming – you might wonder why everyone's complaining. It does limit the drive speed to 9fps in AF-C mode, but that's still quick enough for many types of action. This will include 400Mbps 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra video recording in 4K 30p/25p/24p, Hybrid Log Gamma in Photo Style mode, which enables 4K HDR video recording, and USB tethering. Four Thirds sensor, updated Venus Engine processor, ultra-high resolution EVF and a fully articulating LCD. While wireless live streaming isn’t a feature that’ll appeal to everyone, it’s an emerging phenomenon that few other camera manufacturers seem interested in exploring.

The 75-300mm focal length gives a 35mm-equivalent zoom range of 150-600mm for a standard to super-telephoto reach.

Where the GH5 could be connected to a PC for streaming the Panasonic’s LUMIX Tether software, the GH5 II brings brand new wireless live streaming in full HD at up to 60p, via the LUMIX Sync smartphone app – or by connecting it directly to a Wi-Fi router. ASPH is a very appealing little lens, and its diminutive size captures the gestalt of the format perfectly. According to the specs, what the GH5 II does is unremarkable, save for some more advanced video modes. Clearly, a lot has gone on inside, with the GH5 II’s faster processor, live streaming, pre-installed V-Log L, enhanced frame rate/bit depth combinations and more, but on the outside it’s almost identical to the existing GH5. However, it would have been nice to have seen this extended even further, especially at the higher end of the range, where the GH5 loses out to rivals like the Nikon D500 and Sony Alpha A7S II.Comparisons with the previous Lumix GH5 are inevitable, especially since that camera has gained a very strong reputation amongst filmmakers. We are still waiting for software updates to camera raw conversion tools to work with the GH5 II’s raw files, but its JPEGs are clean, crisp and sharp.

The GH5 II’s batteries have a slightly larger capacity than the GH5’s (2,200mAh rather than 1,860mAh), but the real-world differences are negligible, suggesting the new model is a little more power-hungry. Monochrome / Scenery / Portrait / Custom 1, 2, 3, 4 / Cinelike D / Cinelike V / Like709* / Hybrid Log Gamma*/*7 / V-LogL*/**/*When Creative Video Mode is selected. The camera supports a native ISO range from ISO 200 through 25600, and has ISO 100 available as an extended setting. The magazine is captained by Editor Niall Hampton, with Technique Editor Alistair Campbell adding his own expertise. It's also worth pointing out that video editors like Final Cut Pro and even the humble iMovie have software based stabilization that is very often way more effective than any in-camera e-stabilization.When using an SDHC memory card: You can continue recording without interruption even if the file size exceeds 4 GB, but the motion picture file will be divided and recorded/played back separately. Panasonic doesn't include Raw recording via HDMI, something you get with the first-generation GH5 and the low-light specialist GH5s. Cinematographers will enjoy the better action shots and half-speed slow-mo from 4K60, and we're happy to see V-Log L included with the camera. There are no spectacular gains with the Lumix GH5 II – that’s where we hope the GH6 will deliver – but there are a lot of important upgrades that might easily get overlooked but cumulatively add up to quite an upgrade.
