About this deal

After the meal the man with the hanging head gave Jim a blanket and showed him a room full of shelves and long boxes where all the boys slept. Very interesting to see where the wheels for change were set in motion towards a more charitable and caring society. Winner of England's Carnegie Medal, this complex and often unwieldy novel explores the consequences of a teenager's pregnancy-and the resultant tensions with her boyfriend. I particularly enjoyed this book given that it was based on a real child who was supposedly one of the reasons behind the formation of the Barnados charity. I created a back story of what his life might have been like before he entered the workhouse, and I invented two sisters for him, Emily and Lizzie.

However, I know that for the teachers among you it will be very useful to have a summary that gives a sense of the plot of Street Child so you can plan ahead before presenting it to the children. This text by Berlie Doherty is the perfect story to inspire your learners alongside this great presentation about children at work in the Victorian era. But on arrival Jim’s mother is taken to the infirmary, from where he never sees her again and is simply told of her death. I enjoy this book as it looks at life as a Victorian child in a lighthearted and enjoyable book to read. She can no longer care for Jim and his two sisters so she visits an old friend looking for someone to take in the girls. The story ends well with Jim being found by Dr Barnardo who sets up homes for boys and later girls like Jim.

Most of the children were able to sympathise with Jim after considering their own lives and comparing that to the life of Jim. Some of it was at the Barnardo library in London, some at the London Museum, some in the newspapers that Charles Dickens wrote for as a journalist (All the Year Round), and some in my own head! She makes the past come vividly alive in this story that will help young readers to fight injustice. His crusade to 'rescue children from the streets' was one the best known social interventions in the last half of the nineteenth century. Street Child ends with Emily and Lizzie wanting to tell their story from the moment their ma leaves them in the care of Rosie at the big house. This book follows a young boy named Jim who is found homeless in London after the death of his mother. It was a bombshell Jim dropped when he told Barnardo that there were lots of children sleeping on the streets.

It was warming to see the glimmers of kindness shining within those who may not be so fortunate themselves. In a book of short chapters that seem to take Jim from the misery of life at the workhouse through a series of wretched and brutal experiences, Berlie Doherty makes apparent the plight of street orphans in the Victorian era.A gripping book that doesn't shy away from the brutal reality of life for a lower class Victorian child. The teacher feels so sorry for all the boys that he sets up a home for them and finds them jobs so that they can pay their way. He befriends other street urchins, who make a few coppers selling bootlaces, sweeping horse muck off the streets. Penniless and alone when his mother dies, little Jim Jarvis is put in the workhouse, from which he is determined to escape.
