We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. Transworld managing director Larry Finlay said that “only Wilkins” could have written the “intimate, engaging and revealing portrait of one of the UK’s most loved and most missed authors”. In 2006, I was with Terry when the offer came in for a collection of his nonfiction writing – the book which eventually became A Slip of the Keyboard.

Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes by Rob Wilkins Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes by Rob Wilkins

Moments like that can supplant your memories of what a person was like before; here, Wilkins, who started working for the author in 2000, attempts to recover Pratchett pre-dementia.Always one with an inquisitive mind and easily kindled curiosity, Terry insisted on forging his own sword after being knighted for services to literature. I think I was good, although I could have been better, but Terry Pratchett is dead and there are no more words. And here he is, as the car pulls up outside the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair, putting on his signature black fedora and gathering up his purely decorative ebony cane with its silver Death’s Head handle, and stepping out of the limo into a blizzard of flashbulbs and a gale of shouting photographers and hollering fans who are jammed along the pavement. And then I will help him put on his clean clothes, and we will go back to work – the work that he is so determined to continue doing. To start with, his job was “tidying up” pages covered in clashing layouts and fonts (Pratchett was very font-fickle).

In 1987, having finally taken the plunge and left the CEGB for Gaze Cottage in Somerset and “the cold waters of self-employment”, he needed structure – the structure of an office day, only stricter. All in all it was a lovely read where I learned more about Terry’s world, enjoyed some nostalgic moments and gained some insights into the Disc World stories I love so much. But, precisely because of that, he needed the score to be accurate – not distorted by news-grabbing and ultimately unworkable advances, but genuinely and calculatedly reflecting his status as a seller of books. Given the nature of their professional relationship and friendship, there is also a small element of memoir on Wilkins part too. A veure si ho sé explicar essent just amb un llibre que és un afegit imprescindible als prestatges de tots aquells qui admirem l’obra d’en Terry Pratchett. Five months before he died, Terry Pratchett wrote five letters, sealed them in envelopes and locked them in the safe in his office to be opened after his death. It's at once, illuminating, humbling, inspiring, frustrating, sad, fun, but ultimately as I said a real achievement for Wilkins who I can only imagine had mixed feelings about working through this piece of work and has done and incredibly admirable job.

Terry Pratchett Home - Sir Terry Pratchett

At the time of his death in 2015, award-winning and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett was working on his finest story yet - his own. Even Pratchett himself, with his rings and his sword and his “manorette” of a house, sometimes gave the impression that he had just come down from the Ramtops. Surprising because one has a certain idea about a person that is never complete and the truth is sometimes, well, surprising.Si la part objectiva i la part subjectiva estan alineades, per bé o per mal, tot flueix i la ressenya pot traspuar entusiasme per la lectura realitzada o, de vegades, tot el contrari. It never seemed like I needed to, everything I needed to know was written within the pages of the Discworld books I was reading: how he viewed humanity, how humorous he was and how compassionate he was about pretty much everything. And they would have carried on growing if they hadn’t met resistance from an unlikely source: Terry himself. Některý knihy mají tu sílu najít si k vám cestu, i když jste se ani neobtěžovali podívat se jejich směrem.

Terry ‘I think I was good, though I could have been better’: Terry

I’ve read almost all of his books (no, I still haven’t been able to read the last Discworld book — and after reading about how it was written, in the last months of Terry being Terry, I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to do that). I mark periods of my life by the publishing of his books and it was fascinating to see his process and the back catalogue of work speaks for itself. The creator of the phenomenally bestselling Discworld series, Terry Pratchett was known and loved around the world for his hugely popular books, his smart satirical humour and the humanity of his campaign work. Once Terry could no longer get through public appearances by himself, they became, by necessity, a double act, and Terry would refer to Rob as “the keeper of the anecdote”—other than Terry himself, no one else could have done this project justice.

Transworld managing director Larry Finlay says: ‘ A Life with Footnotes captures the genius that was Terry Pratchett, with warmth, poignancy, and great good humour - and with no small amount of love. After hearing Jilly Cooper talk about her invaluable PA, Pratchett was filled with staff envy and hired Wilkins as an assistant. During 1985, Neil had shown Terry a file containing 5,282 words exploring a scenario in which Richmal Crompton’s William Brown had somehow become the Antichrist. The only reason I read this book was because it was about PTerry and it only felt right that I should. Such as the time that, while working as press officer at the Central Electricity Generating Board, Pratchett had to deal with the story of a worker who took home a radioactive paintbrush from a nuclear facility and used it to touch up the paintwork in his house; an incident that led to a kind of pebble-dash apocalypse.
