Will these 2 ever get their act together and admit they like each other in more than a professional way? The DCI Ryan mysteries are always reliable for a fun read that just zips along, and this one is no exception. I’m really hoping that we get to see more of Samantha in up coming books as she was to much of a great character to be confined to only one.

If you are familiar with the DCI Ryan series, the regular characters make their scheduled appearances and there is the on-going and usual banter – even an amorous liaison – which soon gets the reader back into the groove of crime fighting with DCI Ryan and his team, in and around Newcastle and Northumberland. He is now back in action trying to decipher just who would kill a girl and place her in the strangest position, in a community that barely had 200 people. She really needed to know what actually happened to her mother and was desperately hoping Ryan would be able to find out. There are lots of little twists just as you think you know who the murderer is so that you are taken back to square one with absolutely no clue. Jack’s first case as acting SIO and he wants to prove he’s up to the task but forgets a golden rule (So glad we don’t have to wait much longer for the next book.

Certainly, understanding the relationships between the characters, the trials they have encountered in the past and the manner in which their bonds have been tested can make the DCI Ryan series more enjoyable.Struggling to find a killer that is hiding in plain sight, while navigating small town politics and pagan rituals that muddy the waters, romance is blossoming between the two tortured souls, threatening to slow down the investigation. All the old favourites are back but the standout character in this episode has to be the delightful Samantha. Not the killer, although god knows there have been some deliciously wicked and undeniably loathesome baddies that we all love to hate.
