The emotions are complicated, and I'm not even sure how to describe what emotion Tilda is experiencing except maybe hopelessness.

Percival's digital illustrations use transitions from grayscale to color to create symbolic meaning and have psychological depth, deftly capturing a child's experience of trauma. She creeps closer to observe the ladybird wriggle and struggle but, alas, it seemed that just like Tilda, the ladybird was going to find it just too hard. The inspirational tale is about a girl who suddenly finds her world changed and things that were once easy more challenging and tells how she finds a new way to approach her problem and believe in herself. Here, Tilda finds a way to deal with sudden changes in circumstance, what feels desperately hard becomes a means of finding new ways of doing things. His illustration career has seen him design Halloween merchandise for a major supermarket, create the character 'Hector' for an Aardman-animated road safety campaign and his book illustration work includes the artwork for the phenomenally successful Skulduggery Pleasant series.

Percival's simple, colorful illustrations pair beautifully with the author's thoughtfully worded text. It was the first book that I remember loving and was (guess what) atmospheric, magical and slightly dark.

However, if you're looking for a book on something specific or heavier like a death or illness, this might not be the best starting point. Not every day is going to be just as your children would want it to go, it isn't possible and Tilda shows not only that, but that they can overcome that bad day and things can become brighter again. Of course now that I’m 35 and can still remember EXACTLY what it felt like to be 16 it doesn’t seem that unlikely anymore – ah, the follies of youth. It's well written for young children, with short sharp sentences, perfect for preschool and reception or primary 1 classes as fun and discussions can come out of this book. Tom Percival creates wonderful picture books and this Bright Feelings series is particularly good, especially for those looking at books to support children's mental and emotional health.

It’s the first time that Will Stanton finds himself waking up in an empty house hundreds of years before his time that REALLY excites me about this book.
