About this deal

But why is the apothecary so eager to welcome her when he already has a maid, a half-wit named Mary? Our narrator is sixteen year old Eliza Tally who comes to work for Grayson as a maid along with Mary, a young woman who is stricken with what I took to be Down's Syndrome (though in those times she was referred to as a "half-wit" or an "idiot"). In the author’s notes she even includes some freaky s I do not want to speculate here why people like to engage in masochism, suffice to say that it is not something that I enjoy.

The Nature of Monsters by Clare Clark | Goodreads The Nature of Monsters by Clare Clark | Goodreads

It is a city growing out of control with shamefully inadequate infrastructure - both physical and social - to support the basic functions and needs of its citizenry. The people she loved, the people that mattered, those people made their way as she did, unerringly, their compasses turning them towards true North. It knitted itself into the stench of fog and bodies and factories and refuse and the choked tangle of traffic and the never-ending racket and clatter to throttle the senses and make a man mad. They developed sexual relationships with their targets as part of their cover, in some cases fathering children. As a teenager, Tess falls into environmental activism - and the arms of an older, charismatic protester.

Trespass by Clare Clark - review by Tom Williams Trespass by Clare Clark - review by Tom Williams

Eliza is the unfortunate product of a mother who manipulated her marriage to a rich merchant for political and monetary means. It’s OK, Mum,’ she said, and Tess turned round inside the circle of her arms and cried into her hair. This is not to say it wasn't a good book- I was obviously disturbed as the author intended- but I did not enjoy it and couldn't wait to be finished.

Trespass by Clare Clark | Waterstones

The greatest city in the world is drowning in its own filth, and Parliament has reluctantly begun funding an enormous public works project that will modernize the capital's sewers. Trespass tells the story of Tess, a former environmental activist, and Mia, the daughter she had with another activist who became violent and unstable during Tess’s pregnancy and then disappeared shortly before Mia was born. Expect to come across gruesome, vile, downright revolting, in-depth descriptions of Victorian London’s notorious underground sewer which was responsible for its reputation as the filthiest city in the world in the mid 1800s. In a month she would be a teenager and then presumably she would sleep all day and only come out at night, like a badger.

I’ll also be grateful that this book isn’t a scratch and sniff version as The Great Stink of the title is the period of London history in the 19th century that led to our current sewer system being built by Bazalgette which is a major part of this fantastic story about William May who is a Surveyor who is involved in the works but is also suffering from PTSD from his time in the Crimean war, his symptoms manifest themselves in hallucinations and episodes of self- harm that are truly stomach churning.
