Also is not reasonable in all circumstances since adding/removing layers should be done for reasons other than fitting. Goretex, if that is what they are, is breathable so sweat should evaporate and I must say the smell appears to be stronger OUTSIDE the boot liner and my socks themselves don't smell any worse than normal. Backpacking Light helps hikers and other backcountry enthusiasts overcome their barriers to living a life outside in Wild Places. Even when new, and the Goretex is doing its job, there's a tendency for the water to soak through the outer, meet the Goretex, wick up to the top of the boot, and then down the inside.

The durable textured surface is impervious to dust, grit and dog hairs and also resistant to grease and oil. I use a sheepskin insole in place of the one Vivobarefoot provides and I am comfortable in temps down to 0 F / -14 C. I did once try a pair of quality leather boots without Gore-Tex lining (but with supposedly waterproof leather) and my feet were soaking wet after less than a mile of walking across wet fields of long grass (the best test of waterproofing IMO - standing in a puddle doesn't test boots properly!Backpacking Light community posts are moderated and here to foster helpful and positive discussions about lightweight backpacking. The outsole isn’t the best for winter terrain, so I prefer to use them for warmth as I go around town as opposed to playing in the snow or hiking.

I slipped them on over my socks then slipped my feet into my regular and not at all waterproof bike boots. The insole and body of the boots are lined with 9mm thick felted wool that is moisture wicking and built for extreme temps. Any space here will cause the boot to crease while you walk and very quickly damage not just the Gore-Tex but also the boot, causing both seams and leather to split over time. Most of my time is spent sitting in a blind with very little activity which produces less perspiration than tracking deer. Especially if choosing a wool lined model, you want to wear warm socks, and/or you have extra thick/high volume feet.I used them in summer boots for an entire winter snowshoeing (had forgotten my winter boots far from home and couldn't retrieve them until summer). For me the heel cup is a little stiff (I have a sensitive achilles), but Justin wears his frequently in the winter and they are very practical. Most boots have way too much volume for the average foot, and if you're wearing the wrong thickness socks, the fit will be worse. But we all have these quirky things, just takes up more mind space when you like to be very active in remote locations!

Be Lenka’s best boots for winter are on their DeepGrip outsole (learn about their different outsoles here).

My only personal experience was picking up a pair or GT trail shoes in a sale and they seemed to give the worst of all worlds - after the first few hours they let water in but didn't let it drain out. OTOH I have used my last pair of quality full leather boots for 10 years and north of 1500km of hiking, at least half of it in difficult terrain and with a heavy (15kg+ load). I had purchased a pair of the Magical Shoes boots, but i found that the wool lining really irritated my skin so much even with socks. That said, when moving fast in hot weather one can very easily overload the membrain, pumping out more moisture through your feet than can get out – that means sweaty feet.
