Description

There are over 40 books in the Discworld series, of which four are written for children. The first of these, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, won the Carnegie Medal. Noble dragons don't have friends. The nearest they can get to the idea is an enemy who is still alive. Terry Pratchett wrote these two books. Then all of a sudden he started writing really, really well. I don't know what happened. Maybe he sold his soul. My own theory is that his long-suffering wife waited as patiently as she could for him to pull himself together as a writer; and then, after she proofread his second novel, something in her snapped and she thwapped him in the head with the book in question. "You're better than this, damn it!" she shouted. "Now get in there and write something good!" And he did.

Vimes arrests Wonse, as he tries to summon another dragon, telling Carrot to "throw the book at him". Wonse falls to his death after the very literal Carrot hits him with a thrown copy of Laws and Ordinances of Ankh-Morpork. Anyway, we found we've got a lot in common. It's an amazing coincidence, but my grandfather once had his grandfather whipped for malicious lingering." The Watch is generally regarded as a bunch of incompetents who walk around ringing their bells without accomplishing anything, which is largely accurate. Carrot's arrival changes this; Whereas the existing officers are either cynical, incompetent, mildly crooked or all three, Carrot is honest, straightforward and idealistic. As you would expect from Jon Culsaw, the character's voices are distinct and consistent (if all angry), but for me (and I realise this is in part interpretation) often somewhat inappropriate. Nobby, for example, is some years younger than Vimes (cf Night Watch) whereas he sounds like a chain-smoking 70 year-old. The Patrician is suave, controlled, ironic; whereas Culshaw has him as angry and aggressive. I will grant him that some of these traits become more clear as the series evolves but if you're employed to narrate a series, surely part of the preparation involves reading it through and learning the characters?

The Watch have the sword, and with it they could wield the force of the Noble Dragon. Vimes would much rather no one had power on that scale. The Watch must trek through the Unreal Estate to destroy the sword in a magical lake. Carcer isn't far behind. You can get a perfectly good sense of whether or not you'll enjoy Guards! Guards! by perusing said updates. You will enjoy it if you already enjoy fantasy; you will very likely enjoy it even if you don't generally enjoy fantasy, because the humor, characterization, and dialogue are ridiculously good. The story carries on in the same comedic vein. Tapping into such surgical moments of levity it feels like the MCU should take classes from Sir Terry. But first, what this book is about. What's the good of not wanting to be poor if the rich are allowed to go around livin' in ordinary rooms? Should be marble. (p. 139)

That was how you got to be a power in the land, he thought. You never cared a toss about whatever anyone else thought and you were never, ever, uncertain about anything. THE NEAREST THEY CAN GET TO THE IDEA IS AN ENEMY WHO IS STILL ALIVE.' But I'll be honest, I'm also reading them so I can postpone reading the final Pratchett novel that came out a little while ago. It will be hard for me to read that, knowing that afterwards, there will be no more new Pratchett to read. Ever. The females are always the worst," said another hunter gloomily. "I knew this cross-eyed gorgon once, oh, she was a terror. Kept turning her own nose to stone." (p. 123)

He's ponderous and joyless, plodding through the text at such a dragging pace that he only begins to sound half-natural at 1.2x speed. Worse, there's no flow to his narration: it's a lumbering, halting thing punctuated by continuous inappropriate midsentence pauses, as though he’s forever having to stop to find his place. It absolutely wrings all of the colour out of Pratchett’s nimble language and wordplay and it destroys so much of the comedy. Give him a single-sentence joke, and he'll deliver seven laboured sentences with slow (S L O W) world-weary solemnity and not one glimmer of humour.

I posted approximately 17,000 updates while I reread this book, all quotable quotes. That's not even all the bits I wanted to post, but Goodreads has a strict word-count limit on updates because Goodreads h̶a̶t̶e̶s̶ ̶m̶e̶ knows how I get. When someone tries to oust the Patrician (Lord Vetinari) from his post as leader of Ankh Morpork, Vimes the leader of the Watch turns to the bottle in his top drawer for help. When this doesn't work after many years he foregoes a wee dram and actually starts investigating a case for the first time in years. With help from a bunch of swamp dragons, Lady Ramkin and the misfits in the "Watch" he tries to sort out who is responsible for the re-introduction of impossibly large dragons; who is behind the introduction of the "new King" and where has Lord Vetinari has gone. I get oppressed all the time,” said Brother Doorkeeper. “Mister Critchley, where I work, he oppresses me morning, noon and night, shouting at me and everything. And the woman in the vegetable shop, she oppresses me all the time.” a b Metcalf, Mitch (6 January 2021). "Updated: ShowBuzzDaily's Top 150 Sunday Cable Originals & Network Finals: 01.3.2021". Tropes show how literature is conceptualized and created and which mixture of elements makes works and genres unique:

Retailers:

🤔.. ¿Que hacéis aquí aún?.. The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: 1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the date last shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality. (p. 223)

But you’re my kind,’ said Carrot desperately. In a manner of speaking, yes,’ said his father. ‘In another manner of speaking, which is a rather more precise and accurate manner of speaking, no.'” It's Lady Ramkin's coach," said Nobby. "She's all right." "Well, yes, but what about her ancestors, eh? You don't get big houses and carriages without grindin' the faces of the poor a bit." (p. 198) Terry Pratchett: My daughter Rhianna will take over the Discworld when I'm gone". New Statesman. 14 November 2012 . Retrieved 14 November 2012. Okay, there are standalones, like Small Gods. And in a way, all the Discworld books are standalones. (Except for the first two, because the first one ends on a cliffhanger. Like I said, skip them until you've read some of the really good ones, and then brace yourself and read them purely for continuity purposes.) I started with the 23rd book in the series, Carpe Jugulum, and was perfectly fine, other than a tendency to preach the gospel of Discworld Is Flippin' Amazing And You Have To Read These Books, which I'm trying to get under control. By and large medical assistance was nonexistent and people had to die inefficiently, without the aid of doctors. (p. 136)This is a fanstastic story; the start of the City Guards series, loved by millions and as a story, it needs little introduction. Dalila (26 September 2014). Může se s tím ale začít až v roce 2015 kvůli rozpočtovému plánu BBC. Alt URL Guards! Guards! is the eighth Discworld novel - and after this, dragons will never be the same again! And once Vimes sets his single-minded nature to accomplish something (occasionally aided by the Librarian¹, who is a peanut-loving orangutan, and the imposing figure of Lady Sybil Ramkin, who breeds swamp dragons in her spare time) there is little that can stop him.
