Rimbaud gave advance copies of A Season in Hell to his former mentor and lover, Paul Verlaine, and to a few other friends. Snubbed socially and artistically following a scandal that landed Verlaine in prison, Rimbaud burned the remaining copies of the book in a fireplace at his mother’s house. He also burned a sheaf of his unpublished poems. He said he no longer thought about poetry. The boy who had been the talk of Paris at the age of sixteen—“an infant Shakespeare” in the words of novelist Victor Hugo—gave up poetry for a life of wandering and, eventually, running guns to rebel tribes in Africa. Rimbaud engages with some of the major themes of ‘ A Season in Hell’within this first section. These include isolation, depression/darkness, and religion. This first section asserts that the speaker is “damned” for a reason that is not elucidated. He expresses his sorrow at his life but even more than that, his anger. He’s ready and willing to destroy everything in his life. The speaker is repulsed by Beauty and frustrated by all the men and women he could possibly meet. Rimbaud's style is elevated and incantatory and comes very close to inducing the state I call inspiration. For me it even has a particular type of breathing associated with it and it was quite remarkable to notice this happening simply from reading.) On one plane I could still see how odd and flimsy these fragmented prose poems could look to some, yet the works were also a form of intoxicant: one which clears, not fogs, the mind and feels as if it opens doors. Right or wrong, the works feel as if they must have been written in some laser-focus fever state, tunnel visioned, nothing but the writing, the writing and the most basic of fuel; perfunctory sleep, unwashed, eventually reeking hair and clothes but a mind in cold fire.
